I don't think there's anything which can be called THE reason. I think it's a very complex picture with a myriad of factors. I don't think Islam is at the root of it, though religious conviction surely is one of the many factors.

If the other factors are in play, education alone won't solve anything. Education can help, but we've seen highly educated people go bananas so it's not like that's a cure-all.

Indeed, some highly educated people have been radicalized when they were getting their education, and others have used their education to inflict harm on others.
