Where do the EDL even perform these so-called "rallies"? I haven't seen any here in Newcastle before.

I think the second sentence here speaks poorly of you.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Again, parliamentary supremacy would mean it doesn't apply. That's the line of the government, even if I don't agree with it. If parliament passes a law against free speech, it trumps all previous treaties and laws.
Incidentally, protection of health and morals allows ANY violation. It's a totally useless article.

Allowed exceptions:
interests of national security
territorial integrity or public safety
prevention of disorder or crime
protection of health or morals
protection of the reputation or the rights of others
preventing the disclosure of information received in confidence
maintaining the authority and impartiality of the judiciary

Name for me one type of speech you couldn't ban using one of these exceptions.

Also, a very good example of how much free speech we have under that provision.

European Nations With Laws Outlawing Genocide Denial
Austria
Belgium
Bosnia and Herzegovina
Czech Republic
France
Germany
Hungary
Liechtenstein
Lithuania
Luxembourg
The Netherlands

The European Union's executive Commission proposed a European Union-wide anti-racism xenophobia law in 2001, which included the criminalization of Holocaust denial.

Until recently we had blasphemy laws. We have a culture that is strongly in favour (nominally) of free speech, but a government that wont pass acts to support it.
MOSTLY because of parliamentary superiority. We cant pass a free speech law giving us the right to free speech, since any new law banning certain speech would automatically supercede it.

You're right, that was utter bullshit and everybody - on both sides, non-muslim and muslim - were outraged by that. But it's not enough to justify retribution attacks on them.

@OP: The EDL have all disappeared as they were given a simple Rebus puzzle to solve. They couldn't do it so they realised how terrible their lives were so they all went to hide in the sewers.

Edit: grammatical error.

Bunch of males with an excess of pent up aggression looking for a socially acceptable way to vent ever since the police started taking football riots seriously?

And how lucky they thought they were when they found a target against which to prove themselves real men, whilst also finding themselves free to articulate that niggling racism/xenophobia they've had at the back of their tongues for as long as they they've been alive. And they get to fly the flag of "civic responsibility" to boot!

I'm frankly shocked and appalled that women all over don't just fall at the feet of these young and handsome knights in white armour and service them there and then, now that they have nothing to fear from brown men with bigger dicks and bearing gifts of plentiful dark cloth!

Good thing I didn't mention the 1st amendment then. I can however safely assume that the EDL were legally allowed to have their public meeting since the police were there to separate the protestors...

I disagree with this.
If you drown out someones speech by shouting, you havn't given them the right to speak really.
Freedom of speech implies the freedom of people to listen to ideas and judge them for themselves.
It's the listener who loses out in those cases.

They were legally entitled to have their public meeting, the counter-protest was equally entitled to shout them down.

As many people do, you seem to be forgetting that free speech laws and rights exist to stop the government from abridging an individual's right to free speech.

Silly boy. Freedom of speech means that you can say shit and not get prosecuted for it. It doesn't mean that anybody has to listen to the shit you say - unless you want to put people in prison now for breaching their obligation to listen to everything the other few million people have to say.
