I don't think "society" really consciously decided that.

Consciously? Maybe not. But it is the way society tends to view it - and it has thus been enshrined in law.

Actually, sex without birth control pretty much IS consenting to have a child. Otherwise you would have birth control.

And riding in a car without a seat belt IS consenting to die in an accident. Otherwise you would have a seat belt. ERs should clearly deny all treatment to people who weren't wearing seat belts.

Even if someone believes (as I do) that late-term abortion is morally doubtful, there's no real grounds for banning abortion at the first week of the pregnancy.

Which is why I doubt that they will get much influence, remember this is an old law not one that is being debated in the one house of Queensland's parliament.

Australian Parliamentary Library Website wrote:In each State and Territory, the law provides that the crime of unlawful abortion is punishable by lengthy periods of imprisonment. In Victoria the penalty is five years' imprisonment for both the woman and the abortionist and one year's imprisonment for supplying or procuring anything to assist. In New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory the penalty is ten years' imprisonment for the woman and the abortionist, and five years for supplying or procuring. In South Australia the penalty is life imprisonment for the woman and the abortionist, and three years for supplying or procuring. In the Northern Territory the penalty is seven years' imprisonment for all parties. In Tasmania the penalty for all involved is 21 years' imprisonment and/or a fine as determined by the court. In Queensland (and until recently in Western Australia) the penalty is seven years' imprisonment for the woman, 14 years for the abortionist, and three years for supplying or procuring. Changes to the law in Western Australia have replaced these penalties with a fine of $50 000 where the abortionist is a qualified medical practitioner, and a penalty of five years' imprisonment where the abortionist is not. A woman on whom an unlawful abortion is performed is no longer subject to any legal punishment in Western Australia.

So it is a crime in Queensland. Unless to save the life of the mother. Which is the issue at stake. Noone has been prosecuted for a good long time, so nobody saw a reason to change the law. Now it may be too late.

...

This is seriously wrong information. Abortion was decriminalised in Victoria late last year.

Then you need to take it up with the Parliamentary library. I got the off the government website. Don't blame my sources. It's the government's fault.

http://www.aph.gov.au/library/Pubs/rp/1998-99/99rp01.htm

I did read the wiki article on abortion law in Australia. I was mainly focussed on Queensland law since that is most relevant to the topic.

Well gosh jeez. I found this in between writing report cards and speaking assessments. I didn't check the date. The info on QLD is still relevant though.

So you're signed up as an organ donor, volunteer for medical training, always go out of your way to help people, and donate blood as often as you possibly can? No? How cruel of you to let someone die for your own convenience.

Nobody has the right to use the body of another as a life support machine. If I am critically injured, I don't have the right to demand someone else is wired up to me, to let their heart pump my blood. That person might do it, out of the kindness of their heart, but they always have the right to withdraw from it, even if that will result in my death. Similarly, the fetus has no right to use the body of the mother to support its life -- she may do so if she wishes, but she may always withdraw her consent.

Queensland doesn't have daylight savings in summer. There's an old joke: Queensland, one hour and twenty years behind.

In fairness, since the demise of the very retarded Bjelke-Petersen government in the late eighties, Queensland has become much more progressive.
The world is not cyclical, not eternal or immutable, but endlessly transforms itself, and never goes back, and we can assist in that transformation.

Live on, survive, for the earth gives forth wonders. It may swallow your heart, but the wonders keep on coming. You stand before them bareheaded, shriven. What is expected of you is attention.
