Frank Lloyd Wright

Postby The United Soviet Socialist Republic » Thu Sep 06, 2012 5:37 pm

Seeing as virtually nobody has even heard of this famous architect, including my entire family but me, I decided I would bring him back to his fame by making people aware of him. Frank Lloyd Wright was an architect who designed lots of homes and buildings, including Falling Water a famous house built into a waterfall

, and several other famous buildings few have heard of. He was born in 1867 and died in 1959, he was infamous around the time he died. But sadly few have heard of him now. So NSG, have you heard of him? Was he a good architect? Opinion on his works? So on. I like him, he was a great architect.

I can kinda relate. He did a good job, but then again its not as important as say President Eisenhower.

I was an architecture student, so I studied him very closely. The Darwin Martin House is an hour away from me in the same city that tore down his Larkin Soap Building *sigh*

Hmm, I am actually considering going into architecture. I like to draw, and am good at drawing 2D houses, I think I would do well.

I wanted to be an Architect in Freshmen and Sophomore year of Highschool until I took an Architectural CAD class and sadly the teacher pushed me away from the class.

So I was always fascinated with the work of Frank Lloyd Wright & Richard Morris Hunt. I sadly wish I continued down that path a little more until I truly got a good vision of it.

Hehe, Buffalo kicks ass.

Actually they ended up doing a lot of restoration on the Darwin Martin house these past, 10 years or so.

The larkin soap building was innovative and all, but it was not of the artistic merit that the Darwin Martin house is.

Do you like sleepless nights, delirious sleepless shenanigans and the harshest criticism you can imagine with the promise of the weakest job market in the country? Then architecture is for you. What I can say is that you have to be really dedicated, have an eye for perfection(while knowing perfect is impossible) and be able to tolerate a caffine addiction. For some its the most fun you can have in school, for others its the slope into madness :P

I had fun, now Im on the job hunt

Overall, yea architecture :D

:eyebrow: "Virtually nobody"? He's relatively famous as architects go. Hell, Lego offers models of Robie House and Fallingwater.

I think Wright is a fine architect, but a lousy engineer. It's a wonder Fallingwater hasn't collapsed yet.

Wright was so influential that we look at his work now and get the impression that it is nothing unusual, perhaps it is even derivative.

That's because so many other architects drew inspiration from him.

I had a student who stunned me by claiming that Shakespeare was dull and trite because he kept writing all these cliche phrases like "my kingdom for a horse" or "to be or not to be". D'uh! He is the guy who wrote those words first! It's not his fault if the whole world wants to use them.

I lived in PA's Laurel Highlands area for eight years and visited the Kaufman's famous home twice; it masterfully echoes its surroundings and amplifies them. Everywhere you walk or sit, you have a new experience of the setting.

We also toured Spring Green Wisconsin, but did not get to spend enough time to savor the experience.

has anyone not heard of him?
form fallows function would have been a great concept if he had actually practiced it.
instead, thanks to his appearant love affair with 90 degree angles, my opinion anyway, is that his work is, for the most part, highly over rated.

of course he can be partially excused because he was doing contracts for someone else, but still, so were le corbusair and antonio gaudi.

i'll take gaudi over wright any day of the week.

or roger dean or antoni lovins, or even muybidge, or swan or ...

I don't like his style, but I appreciate it from an artistic perspective. He was a great architect. d

I;m familiar with his work. I consider him more of an artist then an architect. As beutiful as his house are, they're rather shitty places to live in. And he could be an ass if you wanted to change things up.

I live on the street where one of Frank Lloyd Wright's houses were built, its been run down but the windows and all are still so beautiful.

Ida and Grace McElwain House - Lake Bluff, Illinois (1915)

There were two originally, there was the Herbert Angster House, demolished in 1956 but this one survived and it still does.
