I live in Tennessee... I can defiantly tell you, there are racists, but they're will be racists anywhere you go, not just in the south. The whole racist south stereotype is offensive and degrading.

Racism exists anywhere you have minorities. For instance, I'm a Caucasian living in a Virginian community with a high concentration of African-Americans. I can't walk around the block without getting glared at, and if I walk down to Wal-Mart I will inevitably hear something along the lines of "Keep walkin', bitch, get yo' white ass outa' here." (Actual quote.)

As someone who lived in the urban South for a long time (just outside of Atlanta) I never noticed a lot of racism. Looking back, I might have been too young to have noticed some of it, but I never heard any derogatory jokes and never saw any of my black friends being disrespected on the basis of race (again from the perspective of a 13-year-old, I might have been too naïve to notice).

However, when I moved to a very white suburb in Iowa I was confronted with a casual use of racial slurs and more racial jokes in my 14th year than the rest of them combined. I suspect that part of it comes from the fact that where I lived was 97% white where nobody is around to be properly offended at such jokes (I was offended, but if there is anything white people like, it's being offended for others).

Now that I've lived in a few more states in the Midwest and visited more of the rural South, I've noticed that open racism isn't really present in the urban South. In Atlanta, everyone hates you, but it's because you're on the road not because of your race, religion, or creed; however, hit up a few small towns in rural Georgia as a black man and hit on some young white women and see what happens. Same thing with the small town Midwest, especially in the more southern reaches of it, like Nebraska, Kansas, and Missouri. You're going to find that racism isn't necessarily celebrated, but it's also not seen as a character flaw around these parts.

Turns out that people can be shitheads no matter where they live, it just so happens that it's easier to openly be a shithead in certain places.

I have seen very little prejudism down here in South Carolina except when it comes to homosexuality. Yes, South Carolina is still prejudice, but only when it comes to homosexuals.

Anyone who thinks the south is more racist should read up on Dr. King Jr.'s marches in Chicago. At the end of the day, a fair number of humans are racists. Regardless of religion, culture, location, you will ALWAYS find people who by nature dislike others who aren't similar to them. (or you'll find those who are easy to sway and will believe anything you say. Whether this be "hip hopers" or Jews or Muslims)
