I have decided to escalate the developing topic from the Eternal Thread into a full thread after being informed about the number of casualties (Reuters Ticker: "Two people killed in Empire State shooting - NY police source") and the seriousness of the developing event. I will not speculate at present as to what the motive was, or whether there was an indication that there was a link to the Aurora shootings in any form. Regardless, I feel that the debate over the firearms ownership regulations will intensify.

This happen in Manhattan, where shootings are rare.

Holy shit. Since I've been living in NYC, I always wanted to visit the Empire State Building but I always too lazy or busy to visit it. I was planning on visiting before the summer ended.

There are ~12,000 gun murders in the United States per year out of ~30,000 gun related deaths. 500 of those murders were in New York City.

I'm not sure why THIS one will increase debate about gun control.

It happened just a few blocks from where I was while it was happening.

It was strange as hell to see so much of 5th closed over this; I didn't know what had happened, I just saw entire blocks of 5th ave closed, during rush hour.

The biggest thing, its a tourist spot, with families and their kids around. I'm not saying any shooting is good, but somehow it hits harder at the prospect of little kids being in the line of fire.

NYC actually has fairly stringent gun control laws insofar as the US is concerned, I believe.

The raw information so far:

- Took place just after 9am local time (2pm BST), at the junction of 34th Street and Fifth Avenue
- 2 people and gunman dead
- 8 people wounded
- No suggestion of a link to terrorism, pending formal investigation

just because there is a restriction in place, doesn't mean it's airtight and people can't bypass it.

There are restriction for buying guns in NYC and NYS, but guns can be bought easily in other states, especially Virginia which can later be brought to NYC/NYS easily.

I don't know, but again, that this crime wasn't prevented doesn't mean that nothing was done to prevent crime in general, or this crime specifically. It just didn't work.
