The man trying to provide Rep. Todd Akin the softest possible landing after the congressman’s foolish comments about pregnancy and rape was former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a strong supporter of Akin during his run to represent Missouri in the U.S. Senate.

In the furor over Akin’s remarks and increasing pressure for him to drop out of his race against Sen. Claire McCaskill, Huckabee used his syndicated radio program Monday to give the embattled candidate a safe venue to express remorse and his determination to remain in the race. Huckabee also took the opportunity to cast the best possible light on Akin’s awkward position. The former Arkansas governor and onetime GOP presidential contender suggested a couple of cases in which he suggested that rapes, though “horrible tragedies,” had produced admirable human beings.

“Ethel Waters, for example, was the result of a forcible rape,” Huckabee said of the late American gospel singer. One-time presidential candidate Huckabee added: “I used to work for James Robison back in the 1970s, he leads a large Christian organization. He, himself, was the result of a forcible rape. And so I know it happens, and yet even from those horrible, horrible tragedies of rape, which are inexcusable and indefensible, life has come and sometimes, you know, those people are able to do extraordinary things.”

Huckabee left the seminary in 1976 to become director of communications for the fiery televangelist Robison, who once declared he was “sick and tired of hearing about all of the radicals and the perverts and the liberals and the leftists and the communists coming out of the closet.” Robison called on “God’s people to come out of the closet” and re-take control of America.

After leaving the Robison organization, Huckabee went on to his own career in broadcasting and then politics. He continues on as a radio host and with a weekend program on Fox News. Huckabee had previously helped Missouri congressman Akin kick off his campaign and also cut ads for the candidate. In one, Huckabee declared that conservative candidates like Akin “honoring our creator” would “help restore our God-given liberty.”

Robison once told the Christian Broadcasting Network how he was the “product of rape.”

“My mother was a practical nurse and was raped by the alcoholic son of the elderly man she cared for,” Robison said. “It was a forced -- I don't think we would call it violent -- but he forced his affections on her, and at age 40 she conceived me.”

Robison told interviewer Scott Ross how he found out about his conception.

“She told me when I was a teenager, but she had also told this to a pastor and his wife who tried to adopt me when I was a baby,” he said. “They kept me for five years. I thought they were my parents, but I understood that I also had a mother who came to see me occasionally, so it was confusing to a child, but I didn’t need to understand. She took me from them when I was 5.”

Robison said he later had a violent confrontation with his birth father but that his adoptive parents helped him discover God and Jesus Christ.

“So here I sit as a product of rape, but I had an encounter with God,” Robison said. “The principles came into my life, not to make me perfect, but to got me in the pursuit of applying the principles. Look at the offspring: 11 grandchildren, three children, their spouses, and they’re happy. It works! The world needs to see something that works.”

After several years out of the limelight, Robison convened a meeting with other Christian leaders in 2010 to look for ways to oust Obama and end what he called the “assault on faith, family and freedom.”

Akin did not respond directly to the thoughts about Robison, as Huckabee quickly turned the conversation to ask the congressman whether his misstatements about rape and pregnancy would be fatal to his campaign.

Akin said he was not the only candidate ever to “suffer from foot-in-mouth disease,” adding: “The good people of Missouri nominated me and I’m not a quitter. My belief is we are going to take this thing forward and, by the grace of God, we are going to win this race.”

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

Not at all, really.

To Godwin a bit, one can legitimately recognize that lots of good medical knowledge came out of the holocaust.

That does not mean a person supports the holocaust, or wants more holocausts. It's simply a recognition that something perceived as good came out of something bad.

It's not necessarily legitimizing the bad in any way.

More like "Genocide isn't really genocide!" followed up with the clever defense of "Also, we learned a few good things from Nazis killing all those jews!" Followed up by quoting a guy who was saved by something the Nazis came up with after experimenting on Jews saying "Look! I have 11 kids! This nazi stuff works! Praise jesus!"

And thats fine. But bringing it up to defend someone who's, essentially, acting like a neo-nazi, makes you seem suspect.
In the same way, it's perfectly fine to point out that children born from an act of rape are potentially productive citizens, but bringing that up in this situation in defence of Akin makes him suspect.

It's not necessarily legitimizing the bad in any way.

You have to remember the underlying motive, though. Congressman Akin worked with Paul Ryan in the House to narrow the definition of rape so Medicaid would not be obliged to pay for as many abortions for poor women. He also believes that allowing same-sex marriage puts civilization in danger. (Of course, his two opponents in the primary weren't any better, as you no doubt know: one favored the overturn of Roe v. Wade, the other a constitutional amendment declaring that life begins at conception.)

I'm sorry, Gallo, you know I loves ya, but this little tap-dance really only comes down to saying, "Sorry your body was violated and you went through nine months of pregnancy to remind you afterward, but hey, that's a mighty cute baby, so it's all good. Oh, and we cut your food stamps last week, too."

Oh, Huckabee is an ass. Don't get me started.

But let's not kid ourselves and think he said, "You know what we need? Moar raep."

Oh I agree. They're asses.

That's still not the same as what the original poster interpreted it as. "Boys and girls, you need to get more rapey."

why should he stop running? his legislative position was endorsed by EVERY REPUBLICAN IN THE HOUSE including paul ryan who co-sponsored/co-wrote the bill that came from his ignorant view of women--a legislative position that neither man has repudiated since the error of mr akins thinking was revealed to him.

Romney repudiated him, ( I'm on my phone otherwise I would post a link). in a senate election in jersey, after the primary when it became clear the incumbant torricelli was going to tried, he bowed out and was replaced on the ballot by lautenberg. I wonder if the republicans can do the same

yes mitt has made yet another flipflop.

he said today that he supports the exceptions of incest, rape and the life of the mother. in the primary debates he said he would sign a bill that would outlaw all abortions. he said to mike huckabee that he loves the idea of a personhood ammendment.

what a surprise, eh?

The NY Times wrote:G.O.P. Approves Strict Anti-Abortion Language in Party Platform
By MICHAEL COOPER
Even as the Republican establishment continued to call for Representative Todd Akin of Missouri to drop out of his Senate race because of his comments on rape and abortion, Republicans approved platform language on Tuesday calling for a constitutional amendment outlawing abortion with no explicit exceptions for cases of rape or incest.

The anti-abortion plank, approved by the Republican platform committee Tuesday morning in Tampa, Fla., was similar to the planks Republicans have included in their recent party platforms, which also called for a constitutional ban on abortions. The full convention is set to vote on the party’s platform on Monday.

While Republican officials stressed that the plank did not go into granular details, saying that they were better left to the states, the language of the plank seems to leave little room for exceptions to the abortion ban. It states that “the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed.”

“Faithful to the ‘self-evident’ truths enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, we assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed,” said the draft platform language approved Tuesday, which was first reported by CNN. “We support a human life amendment to the Constitution and endorse legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment’s protections apply to unborn children.”

The timing of the approval of the Republican anti-abortion plank was awkward for Mitt Romney, who has denounced Mr. Akin’s comments about rape and abortion and who has said that he supports exceptions to allow abortions in cases of rape. And it comes as his selection of his running mate, Representative Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin, was already drawing scrutiny for his support for a more absolute ban on abortions, even in cases of rape or incest.

But Mr. Romney would hardly be the first Republican nominee at odds with his party’s more absolute opposition to abortion. Just four years ago, the Republican Party adopted a platform with a similar plank seeking an unconditional ban on abortion, even though its nominee, Senator John McCain of Arizona, had urged the party in the past to allow certain exceptions. George W. Bush also supported outlawing abortion except in cases of rape, incest, or when the life of the pregnant woman was in danger.

After this year’s abortion plank language was approved with little debate, the chairman of the platform committee, Gov. Bob McDonnell of Virginia, praised the committee for “affirming our respect for human life” and for doing so expeditiously.

That's the same Governor of Virginia who was embarrassed earlier this year by the vaginal sonogram requirement his legislature passed.
