Just so we're clear, although I disagree with what is apparently (according to what I am told here) certain aspects of mainstream Jewish dogma, I am very proud to be a Jew and I don't plan on renouncing my faith anytime soon.

Yeah, the name "Shimon" made you a little obvious.
Also, what is so important about Circumcision?

I am now learning both French and Hebrew. Re-learning Swedish is next. After that Brazilian Portuguese and Russian.

Having pride in who you are boosts self-confidence and mental health. Obviously, too much of it leads to things like super-Nationalism and Racism, but having a bit of pride in who you are is a good thing to have. Basic psychological logic.
Now I hear from the contrarians...

I suppose that it's each to his own. Personally, I find the very idea of having pride in that which is not yours vile, but whatever.

Who said anything about having pride in that which is not yours? Where is this coming from? I was talking about pride in who you are. That is that which is indeed one's own.

That doesn't make sense, though. If you're proud of your Jewdom, then obviously it's because of the actions and whatnot of those who are and/or were a part of it. Essentially, it's this: they've done something, you're proud of that something because you belong to the same group.

I generally enjoy the culture and the people; plus I love studying the bible (I don't agree with all of it...but then again, who does?), and the history of the Jews.
Although, to be fair, I'm only about as "proud" to be Jewish as I am "proud" to be Scottish or German or Italian or Ukrainian. In many ways it's just who I am, and it's as simple as that. But I think people in general should have some pride in where they come from and who they are. Obviously it can be more complicated then that, but that's the simple answer.

Well if you interpret culture in that way, then I can't argue with you. I for one don't agree with that interpretation of culture, I find it annoyingly contrarian and illogically cynical, although I do see why you would think that and therefore can respect your opinion.
I think it's perfectly reasonable to be proud of something that you are a part of. Obviously it is not as strong or as justified as pride in something you have directly committed yourself; in that sense, I guess I agree with you. Although i think the pride you describe is far from being vile, but now I'm just running in circles, making the same point over and over in a probably annoying fashion.

Well, in hindsight, "vile" seems to be a poor choice of words. I am quite wont to excessiveness. I guess it'd fit chauvinistic nationalism more than just regular one. I just find it to be in poor taste, I guess.
