I dislike both pork and shrimp, but, technically, yes, those are probably at the parties.

Yeah, shrimp do look a little weird. When I was in China, I didn't really appreciate getting whole shrimp and having to take the heads and tails off at the dinner table. But I like the taste if they are batter-fried.
I can see how if you've never eaten that stuff you could just get used to it. I don't eat tomato products because they make me sick, and a lot of people say, "Oh, man, how can you live without ketchup, pizza, spaghetti, etc.?" but it's not really a big deal to me because I've always done it. I'd have a hard time if I ever had to give up ham, though.

Unfortunately when I get up to heaven I won't be as rewarded for not eating Shrimp because it was never really a challenge for me.... but pork on the other hand.... there better be something good for that.

I know what you mean. Pork looks and smells more appetizing when people around you are having it.

Do you think this holiday is more for children?
Do you follow like Shammai and celebrate it on the first of shvat rather than the 15th?
I think it's a little odd holiday.... but I have not really done enough research to make a real claim.

I think it's a holiday that's more relevant now than ever for everyone, and I mean everyone. It's a celebration that benefits the environment (!!!), and thus us.
It's awesome.

I could see how a person who is eco-friendly would see it as an environmental holiday... being in the house of learning all I plan to do on that day is maybe eat some more fruits than I usually would... surely I do not believe it should hinder the studying of the Torah.

the oldest boy's hebrew school promotes it as such, so does the local Jew paper, as well as "tikkun olam".

They and is have a very different view of Tikkun Olam.... modernly it has been painted as giving back to the community.... like planting trees and going to old-folks-homes.... while we do that a lot... that's not one of our main priorities and is actually a very large debate.

surprisingly, on this one, i am on your side, the politicization of judiasm that this entails, i think is bad.
