fair enough

Although I do remember the arm-through-the-rim dunk he did once. That was nice.

What about LeBron James?

The guy's only won one title and people are already comparing him to Michael Jordan.

He's good. He has the potential to be great, maybe greater than Jordan, no one really knows yet. The controversy surrounding him stems from his leaving Cleveland and the highly publicized media fest that was "THE CHOICE". He was young, he wanted publicity, so let boys be boys, right? However, at the Olympics he showed maturity. He was a playmaker, but he could easily penetrate into the paint and score in much the same way Jordan could.

How about everyone who participates in sport? If all you do for a living is frolic about stadiums gayly with other sweaty men, sign endorsement deals, and dribble/kick/bat/throw around balls all day, you are pretty much overrated.

i think he is in the wrong time frame, if he had been around in the late 80's early 90's he would have been fine.

Not true. He was a very good player who had two particular things he could do as well as or better than anyone else in the world. You don't play for the teams he played for when he played for them (before LA) if all but two areas of your game are slightly above average.

That Beckham is more famous for his looks and celebrity is undeniable, but he was actually a very good footballer in the late 90s/early 2000s, even on into the mid-2000s.

:) I was ribbing you with the slightly above average comment...

He wasn't a bad player but there were aspects of his game that he was not good at such as tackling...my objection as such is that he was put on a pedestal as some kind of Pele...which he wasn't. He had good talent but nothing on Pele or Messi or even C Ronaldo. What Beckham did have was an extraordinary will to succeed by improving his game through practice. That I totally respect. So yeah he was a very good player as long as you didn't play him in central midfield and played him on the wing. I don't have an issue with him as a person either...I do respect the way he has managed to keep out of trouble. On the downside I do think he was a bit of mong re the entire WAGS thing though.

Boo! Messi.

Actually Messi's probably a pretty good answer.

Another pair that come to mind are Michael Vick (referred to some as “the greatest black quarterback to play the game”) and Donovan McNabb (called by others the same).

There's only two black quarterbacks who have been truly successful and they weren't McNabb or Vick. Doug Williams successfully brought Tampa Bay into the realm of “teams with offenses” and later won a Super Bowl with Washington (to date, the only black quarterback to win a Super Bowl). Warren Moon…I shouldn't even have to tell you the rest.

All of those people actually had careers. Some of them very successful careers at that.

To be the MOST overrated, imo, one would have to have a huge amount of hype and/or a huge amount of money and then fail utterly and miserably, no championships, possibly not even a finished season.

So, with that in mind, I have to say the title probably goes to either Ryan Leaf, or JaMarcus Russel, who were both majorly hyped, majorly paid, and were some of the worst players to ever play the game on the professional level.

McNabb was really good in his prime, it was Philadelphia that screwed over his career by drafting convicts and buffoons.

And I'm still a believer in Vick provided, again, Philly can get its shit together. But their track record isn't so great on that point. The Eagles seem to have a habit of getting good QBs and then surrounding them with prima-donnas and shit, on both sides of the ball.

However, I think if there is going to be a "Greatest Black QB" it's probably going to be Cam Newton in the end, there seems to be nothing the guy can't do, but he suffers from a similar problem, Carolina has an awful track record at acquiring and managing talent.

Any player this century that signed a big free agent to go to the Angels from another team not named Albert Pujols.

You should take Mike Tyson off the poll and replace him with Audley Harrison.

who

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ali_Dia

One of the great debacles of modern sport.

In US sporting terms, imagine that the Baltimore Orioles general manager received a phone call from someone claiming to be Fernando Valenzuela stating that he had a cousin playing in the Mexican leagues who was incredibly promising, and who the Orioles should sign up immediately.

Then imagine that the Orioles sent him to play in a minor league game, but that the latter minor league game was cancelled, and instead the Orioles called him up to play against the Mets.

Then imagine that he was not a really promising cousin of Fernando Valenzuela, but was instead a total amateur who had only ever previously played a couple of times for semi-professional teams, and that the individual claiming to be 'Fernando Valenzuela' was in fact the university roommate of the 'cousin' who'd telephoned the Orioles' general manager on a dare.

Mind-bogglingly, this is essentially what happened to Southampton in November 1996.

He was a footballing god. You don't finish with a career goal/games ratio of 0.7 if you're overrated.

Saying Messi and CR is a bit silly as well.
