most overrated athlete ever. All sports

Postby Williamson » Tue Aug 14, 2012 5:27 pm

I want to know who NS think the most overrated althlete of all time. Personally i think it is joe nameth. Beside winning that one superbowl he was a below average qb. He had more picks that TD. SO anyway who do you think the most overrated althlete ever is.

Given he went straight from being signed to playing in a PL match without anyone from the Saints watching him play in any kind of game someone must have rated him

who

When Southampton were in the Premiership they heard about this player who was rated to be totally awesome. Instead of scouting him and letting him play a reserves match the manager had him on the subs bench. He came on in the second half (I think) and about ten minutes later was taken off again because it was clear the guy was utterly useless at playing football.

Total classic.

Danica Patrick, very easily. Just media fluff compared to many others.

Can't understand why Beckham is leading. Guess some people don't like soccer. He's very good indeed at his sport. It's only his taste in women that's questionable.

Well (sorry Nadkor!) Beckham did two things really really really well...free kicks and crosses. He was world class at that. However the rest of his game was...slightly above average. People who knew bugger all about football raised him to this level of near godhood and frankly that was bollocks.

You know that in singles Kournikova was ranked in the top 10 at one point, and that in doubles she was world number one and won two grand slams, before her tennis career was cut short by back/spinal problems?

You don't do that unless you're actually good at tennis.

In any case, celebrity outside of your sport =/= being overrated, even if you're actually not very good at your sport.

Not true. He was a very good player who had two particular things he could do as well as or better than anyone else in the world. You don't play for the teams he played for when he played for them (before LA) if all but two areas of your game are slightly above average.

That Beckham is more famous for his looks and celebrity is undeniable, but he was actually a very good footballer in the late 90s/early 2000s, even on into the mid-2000s.

:) I was ribbing you with the slightly above average comment...

He wasn't a bad player but there were aspects of his game that he was not good at such as tackling...my objection as such is that he was put on a pedestal as some kind of Pele...which he wasn't. He had good talent but nothing on Pele or Messi or even C Ronaldo. What Beckham did have was an extraordinary will to succeed by improving his game through practice. That I totally respect. So yeah he was a very good player as long as you didn't play him in central midfield and played him on the wing. I don't have an issue with him as a person either...I do respect the way he has managed to keep out of trouble. On the downside I do think he was a bit of mong re the entire WAGS thing though.

Tom Brady.
The American Legion is a neo-fascist terrorist organization, bent on implementing Paulinist Sharia, and with a history of pogroms against organized labor and peace activists and of lynching those who dare resist or defend themselves against its aggression.

Pro: O'Reilly technical books, crew-length socks, Slide-O-Mix trombone lubricant, Reuben sandwiches
Anti: The eight-line signature limit, lift kits, cancelling Better Off Ted, Chicago Cubs
