Simply put - If you die before you're of breeding age, you don't reproduce and pass on the bad genes, like stupidity, that led to your death.

Say you have a set of tall trees, and a group of creatures move into the forest. The creatures who have the mutated gene giving them to a slightly taller neck are more to reach the leaves, allowing them to be able to eat and therefore survive because they are the fittest for the region. They then mate and pass on the gene giving them taller necks.

That's a fairly shite analogy I think but it's the best I can manage.

Already more or less answered, and some science types are going to go to town, but hey...I'll try to explain it too:

Mutations are random. Just a piece of code that changes something, extra toe or just 'taller.' All of the animals of that type compete for resources, mostly food and humping partners. The ones that are better at getting the first are also generally better at getting the second.

So, if a particular specimen is taller than his compatriots and that tallness makes it easier for him to get food or avoid danger by seeing it coming, he's stronger and healthier and can expend more energy getting laid. So to speak. So he has more offspring than the others, thus passing on his mutation--being taller.

So now there are more tall versions of that animal. And the tall ones are better at getting food, therefore get the girls, making more tall versions of that animal. Sooner or later, a short dude can't even get a sympathy fuck and the short ones die out lonely and shit.

No. "Inferior" is relative. Big fluffy, short-eared things don't do well in deserts while small, skinny, large-eared things tend to freeze to death in cold environments. Whether they're inferior or superior depends on more than themselves.
