Well, specifically I wanted to start (or find) a thread about the MBTI test, but I saw that this one was locked, apparently for being repetetive.

I probably have just misunderstood the reason it was locked, but perhaps someone could explain.....

I believe Nathi locked it as we had just had a spate of them.

If memory serves, we haven't had any of late and there's nothing stopping a new one.

Yes, it's been way too long since we had a whine-about-the-mods thread. My position on your particular issues:
1. A major problem with gravedug threads is that many of the posters in them are gone, or if they are still around, are no longer paying attention to that particular issue, so there is little dialogue. Responding months later to somebody's post has an air of "staircase wit" (NOW I realize what I should have said!)

So?

This place is for dialogue. Talking to ghosts, or to people who are still around but not paying attention to this long-dead thread, is not dialogue. It is just a way of "making yourself right" by having your say with less chance of anyone arguing back.
Blakk Metal wrote:
2&3 seem to be a bit contradictory. Much of the policing has to be done by the posters in-thread; the mods can't be reading all the threads all the time. You are complaining both that the board tends to be "too hard" on people who are arguably acting trollishly, and "too easy" at the same time?

What? They aren't even close to contradicting.

You complain that trolls are chastised too often, and not often enough.

Why should there be anonymous informing? Why should people be able to make random accusations without the person being accused know who's accusing about them and why?

Historical precedent suggests that a regime based on anonymous accusations of misbehaviour encourages tyranny.

"The main charge against Tiberius is that he brought about public ruin. During the early part of his reign, he had supposedly endorsed and encouraged maiestas trials, which resulted in a large number of informers or delatores, who were "a class invented to destroy the commonwealth" (IV.30). Essentially, the social fabric was destroyed in the resulting fear and distrust of fellow Romans. Moreover, an inversion of power resentful such that it was no longer one's position, such as on the cursus honorum, which determined power. Instead, power fell into the hands of the ignoble. Tacitus describes Caepio Crispinus, an informer, as follows: "Needy, obscure, and restless, he wormed himself by stealthy informations into the confidence of a vindictive prince, and soon imperiled all the most distinguished citizens; and having thus gained influence with one, hatred from all besides, he left an example in following which beggars became wealthy, the insignificant, formidable, and brought ruin first on others, finally on themselves" (I.74). It is clear from this description that not only were the informers hated for bringing about public ruin, but that Tiberius was regarded as ultimately responsible because he abetted them. This sentiment is also corroborated by another passage describing how Tiberius stood up for the informers and said "Better to subvert the constitution than to remove its guardians" (VI.30)."

Roman numerals refer to passages in Tacitus' Annals.

Just throwing this out there: it seems that there's ample reason to defend the mods. To quote the section most relevant to this thread:

Eliezer Yudkowsky wrote:I am consistent, usually being first in line to support moderators—even when they're on the other side from me of the internal politics. I know what happens when an online community starts questioning its moderators. Any political enemy I have on a mailing list who's popular enough to be dangerous is probably not someone who would abuse that particular power of censorship, and when they put on their moderator's hat, I vocally support them—they need urging on, not restraining. People who've grown up in academia simply don't realize how strong are the walls of exclusion that keep the trolls out of their lovely garden of "free speech".

I think you could make it more interesting than that. That thread is basically a list of people calling out four letter combinations, which is considerably less interesting than a "what do you look like?" thread with pictures.

If you're going to do it, I suggest in the OP: "Does your result seem right to you?" or maybe even the provocative "which classification is best?" to get some discussion going.

It's a shame a ten-option poll can't cover all the options.
Not just for this, but 20-option polls would be good. Perhaps by application: the poster wanting such a poll would show a mod the OP and the first ten options, say why they want more, then if approved the Mod could add extra options to the poll for them to fill in. I don't know if that's technically possible though.

But that's the price we pay isn't it? Like wearing a wetsuit to go diving, or wearing a suit in court. Internet is best enjoyed while wearing a supplementary hide.
