I can only think of one example, a player with perhaps 60 posts over the course of a year, 100% of them gravedigs, mostly of 2 year old threads, all of them pointless and bloggy. After the fourth or fifth Voice Of Mod telegram asking her to stop and explaining EXACTLY how to avoid it, I gave up and banned her, along with an explanatory VOM telling her how to appeal the ban. No response. Perhaps she never found her TG box either.

I think NERVUN meant as a first-time offence, as that's what Zevassa thought happened.

I suppose you could look at it that way. Of course, there never would have been warnings if she'd followed the instructions in the very first VOM.

I have to say something about this. How do you differentiate between someone who just has an off-colour opinion and someone who is trolling 4 teh lulz?

That's almost always a judgment call ... but we've had a looooooong time to accumulate judgment. Often we'll have an IRC conversation between active mods and get a consensus opinion. Get three or four mods involved, and you're looking at a combined 20+ years of experience identifying trolls. When in doubt, we like to leave 'em enough rope. It usually clarifies within a few hours.

Yes, it's been way too long since we had a whine-about-the-mods thread. My position on your particular issues:
1. A major problem with gravedug threads is that many of the posters in them are gone, or if they are still around, are no longer paying attention to that particular issue, so there is little dialogue. Responding months later to somebody's post has an air of "staircase wit" (NOW I realize what I should have said!)

So?

2&3 seem to be a bit contradictory. Much of the policing has to be done by the posters in-thread; the mods can't be reading all the threads all the time. You are complaining both that the board tends to be "too hard" on people who are arguably acting trollishly, and "too easy" at the same time?

What? They aren't even close to contradicting.

4. Homework threads annoy the hell out of me. I totally approve of that policy.

I've been on a few forums, most of them going to shit.
This is one of the better one's I've been on, and the reason seems to be the mods.

That would be one reason. Others:

1. General gets visited by people who really came for the role-playing but wouldn't ordinarily go on an OOC discussion board. They just wander around the NS site and find General and there are some familiar names here so they post an opinion. Someone attacks their opinion, and they either walk back out muttering "you people take it way too seriously" or they discover the joy of being right.
   
   (I don't roleplay personally, but I can see the scope for both knowing-stuff and for being humorous ... obvious crossover skills to General).
   
2. There's an "old guard" who have been around since early to mid last decade. General is by no means an Old People's Board, but it seems to me from the age graph that maybe a quarter of the posters who voted are old guard, who were in the teenage peak when they joined but have hung around. If only by setting an example of how to debate, they raise the standard above what a mostly-teenage board would be.
   
3. The ease and social acceptance of making NS "puppet" nations. This has up and downsides: on the up, regulars are more cautious of stomping a new user, because it might be a dreaded enemy "coming the raw prawn", and also sometimes a poster with bad habits can shake them with a fresh new name. On the downside: you can get stooged by the same troll over and over because they have a dozen nations all made long ago.
   
   There is just enough pride in postcount or long membership to keep the puppetry from devolving into trolls trolling trolls, but not so much that the board is too cliquey. New users are relatively welcome, because you never really know who is really new.

Well, I for one find our modly overlords quite agreeable most of the time (do I get extra NS points for ass kissing?). I have yet to see anything by them that would make me say that they are "bad at their jobs."

Although I do find some kind of scary...

Although, when it comes to homework threads, I do see somethings where this site could be extremely helpful. Maybe not for something like " Do these math problems for me", but perhaps for something like gathering opinions and ideas and different viewpoints on a subject. You aren't going to get any good responses to that on Yahoo Answers, at least not in a timely fashion.

And a good amount of people here know how to give sources and back up what arguments they make, which is always less head-ache inducing than some sort of he said/she said clusterfuck.
