I've never seen the mods here use hourly bans (less than 24 hours). Which is odd, because I see that in other forums. That, I think, would be better than warnings because unlike warnings, you would actually be alerted if you violated any rules.

In my case, yes. However, I'm not some dishonest student and it would also weaken my case (I've actually posted an assessment on Arts and Fiction before so if some moderator, for NCEA, decided to check its authenticity in some random test more than a year later I'd have some funny questions) were I to do anything dodgy.

However, some dihonest student probably would. And besides, very few posters use sources. One would have to hang around long enough to get an argument going.

One of ASB's long posts could be worked up into a full length essay. You'd get an A (if the plagiarism went undetected) or an F (if not).

And no, "that poster is actually me" isn't going to fly.

It'd be a bit hit and miss. I'm not usually awake when he's around and I don't think the topic is interesting enough to hang around page one or two. Maybe I'll give it a go next week when I have time, just see if it could've worked.

The thing with bans less than 24 hours is that sometimes we don't see the actionable material until that user is already offline for the night. A six hour ban would slip by unnoticed entirely, and have no more real effect than a regular warning. Here on the forums, many users will be on at least once a day, and often close to the same time each day- a 24 hour ban is more likely to actually be noticed.

2. Too Weak on Trolls
Just ask anyone who's been here for more than a month.I'd give examples, but...

It's pretty hard to tell who is a troll and who isn't on these forums, to be fair. There have been one or two times when they've given someone the benefit of the doubt who I felt shouldn't have but... they're just people and god I couldn't do a better job.

3. Trollnaming
As you should know, flaming is banned on virtually every forum with moderators who do more than delete CP. The same is true on NS. For the most part. I have seen many people accuse people who disagree with them of being trolls, including, ironically, a probable troll. Please mods, if some asshole calls someone a troll outside of Moderation, could you just DAMN THEM TO HELL FOR ALL ETERNITY warn them?

Funnily enough, as I read your OP I am suspecting that you yourself are a troll....

I think gravedigging is usually accidental.

This is primarily why I think it's fine as long as it's contributing to a topic positively.

Just to elaborate on this:

Encouraging users to use the Search function before asking questions or posting: Good!
Punishing users by locking topics before their questions are answered when they used the search function to find said topic: Bad!

I was part of a forum once where gravedigging was met by a mod walking in, giving some snide/"humorous" comment about zombie slaying, and the poor person was left high and dry without an answer, which usually resulted in the person flaming or otherwise getting a sour taste in their mouth/warning log. I just feel that locking topics is counter productive if answers or instructions aren't being handed out alongside the lock. Saying "this is an old topic, please don't post in old topics, kthx." isn't very progressive or useful, especially if it was a search engine mistake.

Anyway that's all I have to say on the matter. Carry on.

I suppose you're right. The forum I mentioned do have mods who are fast with their responses, so it might work for them, but not for us.

Ah yes, we hadn't met our August quota of "The mods suck!" threads and I was starting to get worried that we had gone too soft. Alas, we've been saved!

NS, I indeed love the mods, but I have a really, really long history.

In 2009, whilst I was Iraqialand, a mod locked a thread that I declared war with Almajoya, and I invaded it... needless to say, Reppy smacked me with a 3 day ban, AND a warning. Ard tried to give me a warning but, to quote Ard, "Ninja'd by Reppy! "

Okay, fast forward to Khorata. What did that nation in was me reporting a troll puppet of mine, Southern FOX News, and Nathi deat'd me for posting past ban. 3 day ban. A few months later, Syvorji comes, and got some warnings for spamming moderation, but during Summer 2011, got dinged for making a trollish statement and banned for a day, and then six hours for spamming moderation.

And Luziyca? Just a warning in moderation, as well as some 'grams from the moderators, the most recent being to stop "useless comments on Juche," and to stop making frivolous reports.

And that is what I bothered to even remember. The history of myself as a player is so long, but deep down, I love the moderators and even had some conversations by the 'gram. And I know more will come when I submit this. No matter how unjust the mod is, I will not argue with them.

... ummm, yeah we do. It's pretty rare. I can only think of one example, a player with perhaps 60 posts over the course of a year, 100% of them gravedigs, mostly of 2 year old threads, all of them pointless and bloggy. After the fourth or fifth Voice Of Mod telegram asking her to stop and explaining EXACTLY how to avoid it, I gave up and banned her, along with an explanatory VOM telling her how to appeal the ban. No response. Perhaps she never found her TG box either.
