I have heard that it is a humorous way in which some left-wing Americans (key word: some) mock American Southern ultranationalism.
I don't call the US "America". I call the US "United States". America is a continent.
Well, I don't care for it. It's a cheap shot. And there is no continent called "America." There's one called "South America" and another called "North America." The internationally accepted demonym for citizens of the United States is "American." No other country uses it. And yes, I'm in a bad mood.

I mean, really, I know the olympics is an international dickwaving competition, but I thought it was generally acknowledged that people would at least PRETEND it wasn't.

*thinks* Do I yank his chain some more or should I be good and tell him? Decisions, decisions.
That oh-so-edgy mock goes back to President Johnson, who did sound as if he was saying "Uhmuhricans." I find it annoying and too easy a cheap shot.
Not sure how I should respond.

That will do nicely.

EDIT: My God, I say it in a way similar to LBJ. Of course, we're from the same state, but...

No real response required. I was trolling you. I apologize. And I do think, had it not been for that damned war, LBJ would be reckoned one of our greater presidents.

Yes we criticize the first black woman to win all-around gold in olympic gymnastics, the number one ranked gymnast in the world, about her hair and her leotard.
There's no other way to say it, people suck.

No, now, come on, only some people suck. Some people blow, too, but that's a different story. Most people don't really care, which, in this case, is the proper response.

Sure explains why they're where they are making non-issues into big talking points...and a 16 year old teenager is a world-class athlete based on a lot of talent and even more determination.

Oddly enough, the criticism seems to have come from black women. What I can glean is that some people thought her hair was not "natural" enough. I admit I didn't read all the pages that turned up on the Google page Tekania linked, but that is my impression.

From what I could tell, it's actually fucking both, she can't win (well, except for those two gold medals she totally fucking won, she can win shit that matters...). Her hair was apparently wrong because it was straightened and wrong because as she went through her routines it became too nappy and unkempt.
Seriously, if you were looking at her hair and leotard you missed some crazy amazing shit she did. Doing it wrong, people...
