This. The forum is called NationStates, people. It's for a game, not for Why Abortion Is Evil/What's Your Favourite Book/Guess The Blank. People can start their own forum if they want that crap.

And get rid of "International Incidents" and "Factbooks and National Information" too, they're just breeding grounds for n00bs who are dragging down the quality of the forums. Delete "Moderation" as well, since people only ever use it to complain about shit; it's unproductive. And "Got Issues?" Who the hell cares about issues? I mean, apart from Sirocco. Hell, half of the players don't even answer them anymore. For that matter, "Gameplay" is pretty useless as well, since regions can already post their ads on the feeder messageboards and it's not like we care about anything else that goes on in that forum. Plus, think of the bandwidth we'd save.

Hell, think of the bandwidth we'd save if the game got shut down altogether and we all just went and got internships in local government offices and wrote our own blogs about it.

But then Max would make less advertising revenue. Just keep the domain nationstates.net, but delete all the content except the ads and put up a notice saying "NationStates didn't actually improve my book sales, so I decided to delete it because it's a waste of my time. Do check back here for updates though since I might be bringing it back sometime within the next six months."

Wait until visits drop down below fifty or sixty a day, then just drop the domain and stop paying the monthly fees for it.

Ouch! The negativity, it burns! I've never been on a forum where people couldn't speak their minds on RL events. If the two of you hate that so much, just ignore it.

And get rid of "International Incidents" and "Factbooks and National Information" too, they're just breeding grounds for n00bs who are dragging down the quality of the forums.

I see more n00bs posting inane subjects on NSG than in II and FNI. At least in the IC forums, we serious RPers can be (almost) as mean as we like to them, whereas in NSG we have to be covert about it for fear of offending someone's sensibilities.

Delete "Moderation" as well, since people only ever use it to complain about shit; it's unproductive.

Didn't I just see you in Moderation?

And "Got Issues?" Who the hell cares about issues? I mean, apart from Sirocco. Hell, half of the players don't even answer them anymore.

There needs to be someplace where newbies can ask questions about issues, and where I can point out all the grammatical errors in them. :P

For that matter, "Gameplay" is pretty useless as well, since regions can already post their ads on the feeder messageboards and it's not like we care about anything else that goes on in that forum.

Stop attempting to speak for all of us. There needs to be a forum where newbies can raise gameplay issues, or where we can tow such issues when they clutter NS ans II.

Plus, think of the bandwidth we'd save.

"We"? Who is "we"? When's the last time any of us paid Max & Co. for this game/these forums? Unless you're Max in disguise- which I doubt- there's really no reason for you to be concerned about the forums' bandwidth.

Yay! Really happy about the proposed adjustments, since they're basically exactly what I suggested. ;) I voted "get rid of Fiction," but I am equally content with renaming Fiction and making it a place for player-created content, so long as discussions about books and movies and such can still happen on NSG.

What would you know about that, you joined this year, n00b. <.< Besides, the quality has gone way down compared to the great posts of early 2003, like that guy who would show up in RP threads and spam tubgirl and you couldn't report it to moderation because the server was lagging. Ah, he was a character all right.

It must have been someone else with a very similar name. And avatar. And signature. And posting style.

If I figured out the issues on my own, any newb can too! As for grammatical errors, well... go join the MLA forums, we don't do that kind of thing here.

You're the only person who said that. Muravyets agreed with me, and we outnumber you 3-1. (It would be 2-1 but I get two votes because I'm so much smarter than all of you.) Nyah nyah nyaaah.

I like the propose idea to merge Fiction & General, but I think bloggy post (I know I'm going to get comments on this) should go to Forum 7. If nothing more than to keep the "Get a blog" post to a minimum.

Just my 2 cents.

Here is my proposal, Reppy: my idea is to actually split up the NSG forum and distribute the threads to more defined categories... I hope you won't mind I suggest unique names for some:

  • The Coffee Shop (Fiction): Film, literature and media discussion including movies, fiction, novels, comics and television shows.
  • The Buzz (Technology): Computing, Technology, Internet and Video games discussion, including software development, internet technology, custom content for video games and troubleshooting help.
  • The Agora (Politics, Religion and Society): Political, society and religion discussion, including discussing the news.
  • NS World Channel (World Languages): Topics in foreign languages.
  • Forum 7 (Just for Fun): Forum games, any patently silly/spammy type stuff as long it is compliant with forum rules. This will be the only new forum that does not increase the post count.

The Fiction forum would be kept as is, but I have also observed that there is not a place for forumers to seek help with general computer troubleshooting (such as "how to clean up this virus" or "upgrade my computer to play the Sims without crashing", or "how I built my own PC"), 3d modelling (such as "here's what I made in Max or gmax" or "a new skin I designed for that car in GTA SA"), the software and internet (such as "how to make such smooth curves in Google Maps" and "how do I remove AOL 9.0?") and video games they enjoy (such as "I like that game too but in my opinion..."). Therefore I wish to suggest a Technology section to fill that gap.

I also believe it may be feasible to dedicate a section for brining the world together in many languages. The NS World Channel would be proposed to cover foreign language topics such as the Dutch thread and topics in other languages.

What is left of General would become "The Agora" (Greek for an open space serving as an assembly area and backdrop for commercial, civic, social, and religious activities.).

Interesting, but wouldn't that be slicing the forums too thin?

Also, the NS World Channel, how much do you think will really happen there? There will be the dutch thread (obviously) and the occasional Spanish, German or French thread and sometimes some other threads in other languages, but well, to be totally honest, topics in languages that are not in dutch or english are rather short lived :( So I fear it will be quite an empty forum where the dutchies will rule... Hmm, that might actually be cool :p Our own haunted house forum 8)

But seriously, how much demand is there for such a forum? Enough to warrant one?

While I appreciate the sentiment, it's come down from on high that Max doesn't want to split NSG up. He's concerned about subdividing the forums up too much, and I'm inclined to agree with him. Techie topics such as the examples you give could be posted to NSG, but really aren't the sort of things that actually fit within the scope of Nationstates. If someone needs help troubleshooting a computer, they should be asking on a tech website/forum about it instead of a political forum.

So, just to clarify, if Forum 7 amassed it's armies and declared war on NSG for no other reason than not being Forum 7, (we don't need a valid reason for half the things we do, so why would we for a war?), the thread and all its spammy goodness would go in F7, right?

What, no, I totally haven't dreamt of defeating NSG with the powers of F7, why the suspicious looks?

Why would F7 need armies when it could just use the Warhaven bureaucracy to legislate NSG to death? ;)

I voted for giving fiction the axe, but I think General is too general at the moment. Things such as [insert pop culture thing here] vs. [insert rival pop culture thing here] should be relegated to Forum 7, along with some of the less serious topics and topics that don't actually involve much discussion.

We could also do well to remove from the forums the overbearing doomsayers like the one who made the last post.

In terms that he will understand: his negativity vastly lowers the quality of the experience on these boards.

Now that I'm done with my daily parable, on to the original reason why I was going to make this post...

I like the new setup, would like to keep fiction, but noticed that the WA was kept out of all discussion. So, I gotta ask...

Where does the World Assembly fit into all of this? Are we going to drop that, too? (No, I'm not suggesting that we should--in fact, I feel that it should be kept.)

The WA (and likewise the Roleplaying forums) aren't part of this adjustment at all; we've seen no pressing need to revise any of the what-goes-where for those sections; our concern (and apparently the concerns of several players, since this rose from a discussion in NSG awhile ago) with this is limited to just the stuff under the General Discussion subheading at the bottom of the forum. The World Assembly/Gameplay/Roleplay stuff will not be affected at all by this.
