Which American Christian Denomination is least offensive?

Postby Demphor » Mon Jul 23, 2012 1:14 pm

Which is the lesser of the evils? Or for better translation of the title, which American Christian Church does the best job of not pissing NSG off?

As I watch us make threads about how this Pastor spoke out against gays, this one against Muslims, this one against evolution, this one against the homeless, it seems a bit depressing that my religion, Christianity, is just this shitty.

However, I remember that I'm part of one of the few American denominations that really doesn't try to force its religion on other by offending people. That is the American Catholics. I respect the other Christian denominations, but I really do think that other religious leaders are a bit wacky.

Example: I went to a Methodist Church to attend a service with all respect to the Methodists, and well, it really kinda just was fucked up. The pastor spoke out against technology and how we should nevereverubberever trust it or we'll just end up like the Titanic. Keep in mind that the Titanic was an ocean liner that had new technology and was a mix of human error by crashing into an iceberg and underestimate of safety precautions by not putting enough lifeboats on the ship. What does Jesus say about this?

Protestants, well, radical southern Protestant leaders are really the ones who are very into conservative traditions and end up offending a lot of people, they also do a good job of influencing the southern states' political sphere, and therefore we get pissed off by their actions.

Lutherans are not as bad as the Protestants and Methodists, but there are a couple of times we bring them up on NSG and blast them just the same.

Now the ones we really never get ticked off by are the East Orthodox and Catholic Churches. In my 2 years on NSG I've never really seen many threads on which an American Catholic Priest is an antagonist, and I'm sure there is one out there, but we never bring them up that often. The same goes for American Christian Orthodox priests, I've never really seen an Orthodox Priest be the subject of offense.

Now I realize that as a Catholic, I'm part of a church that doesn't allow gays or lesbians and has little tolerance for atheists, but the thing is do we just say, "We are a church that doesn't want gays in the church." I recognize that, that doesn't mean I agree with it, I am a Liberal Catholic.

So to restate the question, which American Christian Denomination does the best job of not pissing people off? Which one takes to national attention all the time? Which one is the best at making us all pissed off like a Bill O'reilly clone when his teleprompter stops working. Why not tell us what you reckon, just click the Post Reply button and click in the typing box, and then merrily beat down on your keyboard with your fists or head, please, if you want to answer my question, go right ahead.

Or be civil and use your fingers to answer.

Anyways, I'm going with American Catholics and East Orthodox.

Oh yeah, and no trolling or flamming plz? Thanks

You can't just lump every member of a denomination together. It's down to the individual. There are plenty of horrendously offensive people in the Catholic, Protestant, and Baptist denominations (I'm looking at you, Fred Phelps).

The Metropolitan Community Church gets the prize.

As for the bigger denominations: Say what you will about Catholic bigotry when it comes to abortion and same-sex marriage...but despite their hatred of gay sex (and most forms of sex) the Catholic Church is against discrimination based on sexual orientation and (unlike some doesn't believe in criminalizing or murdering homosexuals (at least not anymore). Not to mention that the Catholic Church is a little bit more on the compassionate side when it comes to the needy than other denominations which, after mixing in with the GOP, have gone all "fuck the poor!".

Why are Lutherans and Methodists separate from Protestantism?

Answer: The Amish, as they leave everyone nominally alone.

I haven't heard any stinkups attributed to Lutherans so far.
Crimes committed by Muslims will be a pan-Islamic plot and proof of Islam's inherent evil. On the other hand crimes committed by non-Muslims will merely be the acts of loners who do not represent their belief system at all.
The probability of one's participation in homosexual acts is directly proportional to one's public disdain and disgust for homosexuals.
If a political figure makes an accusation of wrongdoing without evidence, odds are probable that the accuser or an associate thereof has in fact committed the very same act, possibly to a worse degree.

To be fair many of the Mainline Protestant Churches continue to stress Social Justice and tolerance of individuals, while it is the Evangelical Protestants who are the outspoken anti-homosexual and pro gospel of wealth.

Living in North Dakota and being an atheist, I am less offended by the Lutherans than any of them. I used to go to a Lutheran church after all, and looking back on it I am surprised at their accepting line of thought. They basically said "God loves you no matter who you are." They didn't exclude gays, blacks, asians, muslims, etc. I didn't agree with their religious beliefs, but the pastors were all lovely people and I couldn't sense a bad bone in them.

Well, it isn't an American church, but this one does have churches in America: The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland.

Truth be told, the church has a lot of in fighting over beliefs. Most members want the church to take a more liberal stance on things like gay marriage, but most leaders have a hard time making up their minds on these things. Anyway, here's a link to find out a bit more on the church: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evangelica ... of_Finland

De Facto probably Christian Universalism. Which by essence tries not to offend anyone or anything, though it will offend some by the 'no possible consequence' bit as it is remarkably lenient towards just about everything in nature.

De Jure? Probably some prominent sects of protestantism, while Catholicism has for a long time become more inclusive and adaptive, it still has a reputation that may offend some people who have either been influenced by it or just like being offended.

American Catholics tend to be pretty liberal, at least where I live so I'm good with them. I've always considered Catholicism philosophically superior to most protestant sects, but of course I come from a largely Catholic family so perhaps I'm a bit biased.

Methodists and Orthodox people are hit or miss. I have no real problem with either.

I've met some pretty decent Lutherans.

The Episcopals/Anglicans tend to be pretty progressive. They accept non-celibate gay clergy so that's a sign of progress.

I often find Unitarian Christians to be quite agreeable. They tend not to be evangelical and leave me in peace so I have no quarrel with them.

Not even that; you can be gay in the Catholic Church, but you just can't act on it. Kind of unfair, but it's better than, say, blaming every natural disaster on gays.

Unitarian Universalists, to my knowledge, pretty much let anyone in, assuming you won't be a raging douche. So far as I can tell, basically their thinking (which I agree with) is along the lines of "Well, we may not have all the answers, but you're welcome to go ahead and do your best to figure it out for yourself, that's fine." I'd take my kids to one, and I'm not even Christian. Perhaps that wasn't the answer you were looking for, since they're not necessarily Christian, but you're free to be pretty much as Christian as you want there, at least as far as I can tell.

Ugh. The Unitarian Universalists in my area have politicized their services so badly that I can't stand to go anymore. I thought it would be good for the kids but damn, if I wanted to indoctrinate them in Marxist ideology I would do it myself. But that's what you get for living in Madison, Wisconsin.
