Look, I'll quote to you - word for word - what's written in my ESV Study Bible, just so I don't mince words and so you can better understand the passage:

7:10-13 honor your father and your mother (cf. Ex. 20:12; 21:17; Deut. 5:16). No one questions the importance of this law in the Ten Commandments; disregarding it was punishable with death in ancient Israel. Part of honoring father and mother is to care for them, both financially and personally, in their old age. However, Jewish tradition allowed that such funds originally dedicated to the care of parents could be declared Corban (Hebrew/Aramaic for legally "dedicated to God"; cf. Lev. 1:2; 2:1; etc.), meaning that the person would no longer be required to do anything for . . . father or mother. These funds could now be given to the temple, if so desired. Such human traditions thus allow room for the depravity of the human heart, directly opposing the Law of Moses which so often serves to protect the weak and helpless, in this case, parents in their feeble old age (making void the word of God). The "Corban" tradition is an example (along with many such things you do) of disregarding and rejecting the more important aspects of the Mosaic law.

Interesting...

Perhaps a lot of confusion comes from the different translations then? This seems logical.

It's basically the same in the ESV as it is in the NIV - the Pharisees were well known for being self-righteous and adhering to the Law and traditions when it served their own purposes. They're the one group of people that get the honorable distinction of being the people no one should be like, according to Jesus.

In this case, they would follow Jewish tradition - the "Corban tradition" - in order to set aside money for the temple and not have to help their parents anymore. They set this tradition higher than the Law that all should honor their father and mother.

Perhaps it's because I'm also reading it in the "context" of jesus having explicitly previously stated that you should follow the old testament rules. Whatever, the other passage I refer to seems to be fairly unambiguous in it's wording.

17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus could have just cast the demons back to hell, rather than torture some pigs, who by the way won't continue into an afterlife. You should be quite happy when a christian dies because they've gone to be with god (as the quotes by the pastor in the OP show). An animal just dies, so one can argue that it is preferable for a christian to die than an animal. A non-christian of course gets tortured eternally, because god is incapable of forgiveness without a blood sacrifice.

1) Yes he did. “If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple“ (Luke 14: 26).

2) No, he's directly addressing the Apostles and anyone else who wishes to follow him. "Do not think that I came to bring peace on Earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man's enemies will be the members of his household. He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me. He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it." (Matthew 10:34–39 NASB)

Pastor Newcombe is not a Christian. If he were, he'd know that the Christ saves all humankind. Any non-universalist position is also a non-Christian one.
The American Legion is a neo-fascist terrorist organization, bent on implementing Paulinist Sharia, and with a history of pogroms against organized labor and peace activists and of lynching those who dare resist or defend themselves against its aggression.

I'm sure the victims are more offended by being shot than what some idiot Pastor has to say about the incident. I hate when people use other people's deaths/injuries in vain.
When anybody preaches disunity, tries to pit one of us against each other through class warfare, race hatred, or religious intolerance, you know that person seeks to rob us of our freedom and destroy our very lives.
