No please, enlighten us - I'll be fascinated to see you come up with an alternative 'best British day in athletics ever'.

Because really, there hasn't been.

But the problem here may be one of trans-Atlantic linguistic differences.

In British English, 'athletics' specifically refers to what is referred to as 'track and field' in the United States, where I believe - despite your being a Serb - you currently reside.

And Britain has never won three gold medals in a single athletics session before; ergo, this was Britain's greatest ever day in athletics.

Whether it was Britain's greatest ever sporting day is an entirely separate issue, and one certainly open to debate - but no one can seriously argue that it wasn't this country's greatest day ever in athletics specifically.

First of all, Its not about "enlightening" you so no need to be so condescending, I already said I was not trying to cause a conflict or an argument this is not a debate its a light conversation, second of all that there hasn't is your opinion. Not everyone has to adopt your criteria for measuring this, and I actually already posted my response to this question. I never said that there was an alternate day that was the best, so don't make the assumption that I hold that opinion. I'm done going over this already.

Of course they could. Medal counts aren't the only measure of greatness. Overcoming some major adversity to achieve success could, for example, be an alternative measure.

Never in one session perhaps, but in one day?

I mean we got 40 odd gold medals in 1908, so surely there'd be a day in those games with more? That's if you're measuring by medals of course, leaving out other more subjective measurements.

True, tennis isn't that exciting to watch unless their are tantrums or the players are being particularly entertaining.

Here's the full run-down of the 1908 athletics medals: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athletics_ ... r_Olympics

While Britain won 7 golds in athletics across the entire 13 days, the most they won in any single day (on July the 18th and 25th) - never mind a single session - was two.

Ergo, in terms of gold medals won, last night remains the greatest night ever in the history of British athletics.

I'm sure we'd all be excited to read your coherent points of argument to the contrary, should you choose to make them.

Truly, we remain deeply saddened that you're not sharing with us your extraordinary sporting knowledge and wisdom as regards past British success in athletics.

Since I've already posted my opinion of this topic of discussion and told you that by looking at my previous posts you would find it, and that I did not want to post it again, why are you still quoting me, asking for my opinion? I have no problem with the fact that you hold different criteria for measuring this and an different opinion on the issue than I do, so what is your problem with me? Please refer to my previous posts and if you have a question about them ask me, otherwise please stop quoting me I don't want to go over this again.

Being stubborn for the sake of it won't win you any friends and will very likely just piss people off.

I have already posted my opinion on this issue refer to previous posts in this thread. Please stop harassing me.

I asked you once and that equates to harassment? I resent these accusations. Maybe you should go and learn what harassment means.

I'm sure we'd all be excited to read your coherent points of argument to the contrary, should you choose to make them.

Truly, we remain deeply saddened that you're not sharing with us your extraordinary sporting knowledge and wisdom as regards past British success in athletics.

Your modest and humbling unwillingness to do so remains a tragedy for all of us, no doubt.

I've already shared my opinion on this issue. The person whom I was having the conversation with was perfectly satisfied with my answer. Since I've already posted my opinion of this topic of discussion and told you that by looking at my previous posts you would find it, and that I did not want to post it again, why are you still quoting me, asking for my opinion? I've already told you that I don't want to go over this any more. I have no problem with the fact that you hold different criteria for measuring this and an different opinion on the issue than I do, so what is your problem with me? Please refer to my previous posts and if you have a question about them ask me, otherwise please stop quoting me I don't want to go over this again.

I have already done so at length, and find no post where you satisfactorily address your contention that saying last night was the greatest day in the history of British athletics is hyperbole.

There is only an exchange where Krytenia asks you to TG him your thoughts on the issue.

Since any subsequent TG exchange isn't a matter of public record, we have no basis for accepting your contention that Krytenia is 'perfectly satisfied' with your answer.

Your point that there are other measures for deciding whether last night was the greatest ever night for British athletics is a good one, but you are using it poorly.

Stating that this is the case doesn't by itself prove your point about hyperbole; to do so satisfactorily requires further elaboration.

Specifically, it requires:

A) A more detailed outlining of what those other criteria might be.

B) A specific example of a time when those other criteria were met for British athletics, and specifically British athletics, not British sport generally.

C) Using points A and B to therefore demonstrate that people are engaging in hyperbole because there are other days and nights which were demonstrably better.

Given your confidence over this point, we have no doubt you can construct this argument clearly and logically - we merely wait for you to do so on our behalf.

I already posted my opinion on the topic. Unless you have something having to do with my previous post where I posted my opinion, please stop quoting me, like I have asked everyone to do many times previously.
