Revolutionarily wrote:I do not know many Muslims however the ones that i do know i seem to hear Ramadan brought up a lot. I hear how much they can't wait to eat at night and how much food they eat. I hear about the exact minute they can start eating. Sure if i was deprived of food i'd probably act the same. However is the point of fasting not to bring yourself closer to God, not wanting worldly things more? I understand that this does not represent all Muslims however i do not understand this concept of fasting where it is boldly displayed. If you ask me you shouldn't fast to discipline yourself but out of love because you are so immersed with God whether in prayer, reading scripture, etc that you forget to eat because God is just that much greater than your physical need to eat.

It's suppose to make you appreciate what you have, I think. If you experience starvation, you'd be more thankful for food, would you not? Otherwise you'd just take it for granted.

That is true, i do not really think of food as something to be grateful for however it is

Honestly, I'm hesitant to call "Eating less for a few days" as "experiencing starvation". Especially if they know there's food at the end of it.

If you want to experience genuine starvation, come 'round my place. I'll tell you about starvation.

Most are adjusted to the solar cycle, so the Holidays only vary by a few weeks. The Islamic calender is different in that the Holidays can vary by several months.

I think many of you have rasied very important questions. The need to understand what it truly means to be in the ramadan mood. Some people just fast, with the mindset that they are in the ramadan mood and forgot many of the important principle of this holy month. It is advisable to eat very little when you go to brake, to be humble about what you have. If you talk about how much food you are going to get to eat after fasting, it is consider that you have already broke your fast, hence your fast would not be counted. The importance of humility, humblness and selflessness is what ramdan is all about. It is not a time to eat lot at the end of your day, but a time for reflection, a time for connecting with god and asking for his mercy for all the awful things that you have done through out the year.

I read these conditions can break one's fast...
1. Women on their period
2. sex
3. masturbation
4. brushing teeth & mouth wash (just let them rot and stink)
5. can't let anything absorb into the skin (so I can't use lotions or ointments for skin conditions)
6.drinking water?!
7. I don't remember the rest

Your religion is harsh to people. Starving is also bad for people to0, starving weakens one's immune system, and people can die if they eat to much immedialtly after starving.

You could do all those things in the midnight when you wake up tp eat before the sun comes up. It is not advisable to eat too much during iftar dinner.

Ramadan means getting up at four in the morning and fasting until evening.

One of the servants is a fairly devout Muslim, and I believe that the early hours get to her most. It's privately incomprehensible how she can still be on her feet this moment.

Moslems that I've known have always expained Ramadan to me as being primarily about remembering the poor. Am I right in thinking that there's also an expectation to donate a proportion of your savings to charity at the end of the month? A lady at the Yoga class I go to said something like that last week. Personally the whole thing sounds like a test of endurance to me, but I suppose I'd look forward to the feast at the end!

Happy Ramadan, or whatever the correct terminology is.

Im suprised this hasnt broken down into a militant bashing of Islam like the last thread (About a Judaism holiday I think?) did.

So thats a plus.

Anyways, happy Muslim-Lent.

Mainly because it's an oddity in the western world to have servants, in this day and age, unless you belong to a very exclusive aristocracy. Initially, I thought you were from the Middle East. Maybe Saudi Arabia or Oman.

I wouldn't be so sure if positions such as butlers and housekeeps would be described as "servants".

But I never imagined Namibia to have all that many Muslims. Has she come from abroad?

No, she's not. I believe she's Nama. Muslims here were never really noticed until a few years ago, but for some reason or another you hear and see more of them now.

With unemployment so bad in the area nowadays, we're just happy to be giving these people jobs, but some have taken advantage of us. There was an agency housekeeper who came a few times a month, but then she disappeared with some family treasures. The last cook had to be fired for the same offence.

There are three servants on staff now, two maids and a gardener. Every other family on the street maintains at least this many, but we certainly don't consider it a particularly wealthy or upper crust neighborhood.

Ramadan Mubarak and Ramadan Karim everyone!
For information, Ramadan is the month when we're fasting. Fasting is to refrain from eating and drinking from dawn until sunset. During fasting we are prohibited from intercourse with women, eating and drinking. But if you just brush your teeth you're allowed.

Actually, a good lot of Muslims put on weight during Ramadan because they completely gorge themselves following the Adan for Maghrib prayers and the food is typically excellent.

Anyway, I'm not fasting but I am pretending I am. I wouldn't mind fasting for real but I'm in pretty decent shape these days and I want to keep it up at the gym and in terms of regular healthy meals. Vanity first. :p
