Ramadan Start Today!

Postby Zaharawi » Fri Jul 20, 2012 4:09 pm

Being a Muslim, I have had the oppotunity to witness and hear many people come up with different interpritation of what Ramadan is. My definition of Ramadan is different from many people and I just would like to hear other people's opinion of what Ramadan is.

Ramadan means to me a special month when rewards of good deeds (which we normally do anyway) is multiplied.

People are encourage to be more charitable, generous etc.
One is not to get angry, backbite, swear and other bad things.

we get to go for special prayer called tarawih at night, and be with the Muslims, and might get the chance to hear a short talk in the middle of prayer.

usually different customs make special different food that is enjoyed everyday at iftar time/when breaking fast. this is specially loved by children who are not even in the age of fasting yet.

to do something in the cause to seek the face of the Lord is very rewarding... i mean, the feeling, and the cleansing of the heart. and the anticipation to break the fast, often sitting with family or other muslims is a very wonderful experience.

many ppl compete to do good deeds that increases the amount of good deed, more cleansing, and makes it more enjoyable.

fasting is a shield from the hell fire. there are clear rewards of this world and the hereafter for those who sincerely fasts by obeying the command of the Lord. so more than anything else, the details given in Islamic values for fasting (the 4th pillar of islam), and seeking the mercy, forgiveness, righteousness, rewards makes it the most beneficial and wonderful.

Now, I know that many of you might not be muslims, but what are your understanding of Ramadan? General discussion about what you have heard before and how this might contradict some of my opinion are welcome. I just generally like to hear people's opinion of this holy month. Ramadan Kareem to all muslms on NationState.

Ramadan is okay I guess even if it can get a little tedious having a Muslim complaining about not breaking fast for a month straight. Its like the woman in the office who goes on periodic diets only, instead of hearing about crisps its all about harem things and instead of the Friday gorging its hearing about her menstrual cycle.

That is what makes it worth while for me. The challenges that it entails, the generosity of giving one's time to make a difference in the life of other people.

I hope every Muslim on this forum will be able to observe Ramadan happily and safely this year, with friends and family. May every kind of blessing reward your devotion.

I see it as one of those weird religious things I really can't understand, but hey, if someone's happy doing it... :meh:

Anyway, happy ramadan to all who observe it.

Happy Ramadan to everyone who celebrates it!

May the Ramadan bring you
peace and prosperity,
good health and wealth,
and brighten your life forever...

A friend helped me with that obviously...
And so it was, that I had never changed.

I wished ramadan karim to my Muslim friends. From a religious point of view, I think contemplating whatever you believe in and separating yourself from the material world is a good thing; however, if it becomes about showing off how big a banquet you can host, then it becomes worse than useless.

If I weren't ridiculously broke, I might call up my Muslim friend and see if he wanted to do an iftar together (with others too, preferably).

To the Muslims of NSG, Ramadan kareem.

Have a happy feast while it's dark and fast while it's light holiday.

This actually fucked me over a bit today.

The muslims at work were pretty convinced that it would start on Friday and we had a site bbq. We adjusted the amount of food down in recognition of this and then it turns out it was starting on Saturday and they ate as normal.

Nearly didn't have enough for everyone. Damn moon.

Err... Ramadan mubarak and ramadan karim are both acceptable... Where I am from, I never ever heard ramadan karim, always ramadan mubarak. So I don't understand why you are correcting him when he was perfectly correct (as both are correct). That kind of goes against the spirit of this holiday.

The most preferable term is ramadan kareem. During eid, it is then considered aproprate to use mubarak. I was not trying to put him down or anything, I was just pointing it out to him.

I suppose I should just google this, but clearly I have no idea how the start of Ramadan is figured.

Well, I hope it brings you whatever it's supposed to bring you.

The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar. That's why the holidays appear to move around.

In fact, aren't most calendars that aren't the Gregorian calendar lunar? I know the Jewish calendar is and I'm fairly certain there were a few Asian calendars that were.
