Human Superiority

Postby Hathradic States » Thu Jul 12, 2012 10:08 pm

Since I realized I was beginning a massive threadjack, I decided to drag this topic to its own thread.

The question is, are we humans the superior species on the planet? If so, why are we, a bunch of near hairless apes, the superior species on our miserable rock?

My personal belief is that, yes, human are. For one, we are one of the most widespread species on the planet (with rats and pigeons right there with us). Out of those widespread species, we have the most ability to adapt to our enviroment (if it is cold, we put on clothes. If it is hot, we build a motherfucking A/C unit), as well as a far lead in technology (Atomic bombs anyone?).

We're superior, as evidenced by the fact that we can question it or even recognize it.
"Then I was fertilized and grew wise;
From a word to a word I was led to a word,
From a work to a work I was led to a work."
- Odin, Hávamál 138-141, the Poetic Edda, as translated by Dan McCoy.

I enjoy meta-humor and self-deprecation. Annoying, right?

Goodbye.

We are superior because I am one. I grant nothing special to the human species, but as I am human, my species is the ruler of all creation. If something claims to be superior, I will oppose it. If they are stronger then us, then we struggle and die. But we will be superior until the dying breath of the last of mankind.

We have a unique position on this planet and in the immediate vicinity of this planet. That carries with it certain benefits and risks.

Superiority is the wrong way to look at it in my view.

By most criteria defining superiority, yes, we would be considered superior.

Which is no excuse for cinematic "HUMANITY, FUCK YEAH" scenes.

Why do we need an excuse for cinematic "WHOOO!!! HUMANITY!!! FUCKIN' A!!!" scenes? :p

As I said, we can intentionally distort which is my mind makes us superior but necessarily better.

Hell, the mere fact that we've resorted to killing each other over resources instead of other animals tells it all.

That's just standard competition. For example stags fight for the resource in the shape of the hind.

Yes for certain values of "superior", and no for others. It depends on what exactly one defines and qualifies superiority as. Some people might class our possession of nuclear technology and the bomb as a sign of superiority due to having such deadly power at our command. Others might say it's proof of our inferiority because we've intentionally created something that could easily destroy ourselves.

It's the same sentiments. Every individual within a species is in competetion with the other individuals (not necessarily all of them). Every species as a species competes with other species for what it needs. Only humans call this situation a multitude of things and study it with varying degrees of completeness.*

*Possibly a neologism.

Yes, we are the most advanced lifeform of this planet and superior to all others. We have amassed an unparalleled level of knowledge in our comparatively short existance as a species, and we have used this collective wisdom to propagate ourselves and dominate the other creatures.
