Socialist president?

Postby Sedikal » Wed Jul 11, 2012 5:13 am

I was looking around in the socialist party of America's track recorded and got to thinking "could one of are guys actually win a presidential election?"

I thought this would make good conversation amoung my fellow NSers so I'm putting this thread out. Personally I don't think it will happen so or if it does the person will probably not be affiliated with the socialist party.

Absolutely it could happen. Democrats and Republicans have been elected, and they are pretty much socialists. Maybe Socialists Lite (tm).

There could easily be a socialist president one day... but they'd have to call it something else... like... pro-american... or proggressovational... or something else that doesn't set Clancy and Cletus's alarm bells off.
The Queen of quips, the Sultan of snickering, the President of puns, the Generalissimo of jollity, the Tsar of zingers, the Guru of guffaws, the Jam Sahib of jokes, the Maharajah of mirth, the Chhatrapati of cheer, the Poligar of punch lines, the Rao Bahadur of revelry, the Baivarapatish of bullshit, the Chief Executive of chuckles, the Managing Director of merriment, the Deputy Financial Officer of damn funny observations, the Satrap of satire, who'll never give you a flat tire, 'cos she's not that dire, she used to have testicles, she still wears spectacles, the Edith Piaf of amateur table tennis (she regrets nothing about her backhand smashes) and the self-declared inventor of the prawn burrito... The one, the only... The chunter hunter... Great Yorkshire.

No. Americans are frankly unable to understand socialism, and a socialist president is impossible while a certain political party has given the very word a pejorative meaning.

It won't happen.

Most Americans don't know what socialism is, but have had it drummed into them from birth that it's "bad".

Furthermore socialism is becoming increasingly unpopular even in more socialistic places such as Europe, hence the transition to "Third Way Socialism" amongst most left and centre-left parties throughout the western world.

But of course we've already got a socialist president! Just ask the Tea Party. They'll tell ya how they oppose the president because he's a socialist, and they'll tell you how unfair it is that there's a Socialist History Month in February, that the Socialist Panthers blocked the polls in Philadelphia or some place, and how much they loved the movies "School of Rock" and "Nacho Libre", starring the hilarious, chubby comedian, Jack Socialist. And their favorite song is "Paranoid", by the band Socialist Sabbath.

It is unlikely or they had to call themselves other things, like Democratic Centrists. Because when they hear socialism, they think it is bad.

Of course, most Americans falsely believe that socialism is giving the government the ability to control us in any way shape or form.

To which I say:
Nothing is more certain than the indispensable necessity of government, and it is equally undeniable, that whenever and however it is instituted, the people must cede to it some of their natural rights in order to vest it with requisite powers.

Socialism in America will onlywork if they act less like commies & more like the Socialist Parties (france, belgium & Portugal) Socialist Workers' Party (spain), and various social democratic parties in europe, in short, be more liberal and the american people will like you.

It won't happen for a long time unfortunately. Maybe if they called themselves something like the End Poverty party they might because at the moment "socialist" is seen as a dirty word in the US.

Well they are Conservative or centre-right both of them, but they showed all the signs of expanding the welfare state and centralization. The are somewhat Authoritarian as well which also fits to Social Democracy at least European style. The U.S is in a special situation of course, with all its federalism and what not.
