People dropping US Citizenship

Postby Euronion » Mon Jul 09, 2012 7:56 pm

source

It seems that as of late a lot of people have begun dropping their citizenships, the latest in this trend is Denise Rich. I first heard about this in May with Facebook Co-Founder Eduardo Saverin dropping his US citizenship. Many people think it has economic motivations (including me) but Denise Rich claims that she merely wishes to spend more time in Europe, but how would being a US citizen stop you from doing so? Another fact that I found interesting from the IRS was that the amount of people turning in their passports has gone up 700% since 2008 from a mere 200+ to now nearly 1,800. One thing that I thought about was how dangerous it can be to give up your US citizenship, so why would you do so? I mean without a citizenship, you can be tossed in Guantanamo Bay and be tortured and killed with no trial or anything of the sorts. You have no right to free-speech or any of the rights guaranteed to you as a US Citizen. So why do you think that people are giving up their US citizenship NS? Is it purely for economic reasons? are people scared that the US may collapse soon so they are cutting their ties before it goes under? or are they really doing it for their own various purposes? how do you feel about this NSGers? would you give up your US citizenship (let's assume for the sake of argument that you do have one)?

I think it is purely for economic reasons with perhaps a little fear on the side of things. In my opinion if you were afraid of a collapsing USA, why would you still reside in the country? wouldn't you leave? I also think that US citizenship wouldn't constrict you in any way internationally, in fact it may help you if you are ever taken hostage or something. To be honest, as a patriot, it makes me kind of angry to see people give up their citizenship seeing how many people in this country would love to have US citizenship, it also makes me angry that anyone would willingly give up any ties to America simply because they want a bit more money. I would never ever give up my US citizenship, I followed the NDAA, SOPA, PIPA, ACTA and the PATRIOT Act, I know that my rights just as a US citizen are being stripped let alone if I weren't to have one at all, it sends chills up my spine thinking how the government could abuse me.

Watch those traitors cry when they need that citizenship

It's just one of the ways people want to show others "See I am all left wing and I am like super cool for denouncing the country that fed me for the past XX years!"

People moans nonstop about the negatives but they have forgot how much protection and safety they were born in. Imagine being born in north korea, or other extreme countries, gl/hf denouncing your citizenship, let alone leaving the country.

I dont understand how people can just burn the bridge they walked on.

If they're staying in the US: Probably economic reasons.
If they're leaving the US: Probably just cutting ties with a country they dislike.

If I were a US citizen, I'd instantly give up my US citizenship once I left the country for Canada. No reason to hold on to a citizenship you don't need.

They're doing it for various reasons. I'm sure there are few stupid people leaving out of fear of a collapsing US, but they're just that. Stupid.

As for economic reasons, few people can actually afford to drop everything they have in one nation to live a life in another.

Since the NDAA, citizens can be chucked in Gitmo too.

Anyway, 75% exit tax for millionaires, 95% exit tax for billionaires, problem solved.

Especially considering they probably have citizenship in whatever country they're currently living in.

Ah the only reason by far that explains this rise is because they don't want to be responsible and pay their taxes like everyone else. That's what rich did she dropped because she did not want to pay taxes. So if that's the only reason she dropping I say good riddance we'd be better off without Tax evaders like her.

Americans can be disturbingly jingoistic, sometimes. It worries me.

Depending on what country one chooses to live in, actual renunciation may not be necessary for the person even if they want citizenship of the foreign country.

In my opinion, they feel the need to depart, because they saw the human rights abuses in the USA, and therefore have to leave before THEY get abused.

Well, we can then just point out that they are citizens of Azawad and Somaliland and whisk them back to get "loved" by Mother Gitmo.

Except for celebrities, not that many people are.....

That said, who cares? I know of several American celebrities who lived in Europe until taxes became such a bitch (and the taxes there are ridiculously stupid) and came here. God, I love the world. We are condemned by Europe as being "backwards" and yet we are the number one spot for poor immigrants and the ridiculously rich.

But then why aren't people dropping Saudi citizenship? Or North Korean? Or (insert oppressive regime that doesn't have high-profile people dropping their citizenships here)?

I've considered applying for British citizenship.
But all these rich people leaving the country to avoid paying taxes piss me off.

The DPRK is free. So free that they don't want to leave. And Saudi? Because if they do, they are considered to be a subspecies of human called "terrorists," and whisked to make love to Mother Gitmo.

Where exactly are you from that you feel like you even know what human rights abuses look like? Because in the 10 years I have lived in the U.S. I have NEVER once seen anything that remotely resembled a human rights violation.
