*You wanna know another reason why Korea was so successful in economic development and the Philippines weren't? Despite Korea starting out with a far lower GDP? Education. When factories were being built in Korea during the '60s, the Korean workers could actually READ and INTERPRET. Later on, when the economy got better: Korean scientists and engineers began to blossom from an EDUCATION system. It's not that anyone's genetically smart or stupid. It's the fact that one nation had a nationalized, compulsory, good education system while one did not.

Rich parents on the other hand, can opt out their kids if the public schools aren't handling the task, thus poor children suffer the most.

When I was at school I got behind on my coursework and got put in isolation, I had to sit outside the headmaster's office all day and work until I was caught up. The thing is essays had to be typed, hand written pieces weren't accepted but my headmaster refused to let me use a computer. I was actually getting less done being punished than if I was in the regular system.

I'm an 18-year veteran (survivor?) of Catholic schools, so where do I begin...

Elementary/Middle school:
* Those of us who rode the bus had to get picked up in front of the school by the bus and driven to the public elementary school to transfer to the other bus to take us home. Needless to say, if this bus was late you're screwed. And they couldn't let us walk to the public school for safety reasons, despite the public school being only three doors down from the back driveway to our school parking lot and it would have been faster walking instead of waiting for the bus.
* The computer lab got new computers. iMacs.
* The PE teacher was actually the art teacher. Who never let us play fun games. Plus it seemed like half the time I ever spent in PE class was spent jumping rope while the teacher played the "Space Jam" theme. I still cringe when I hear it.
* Our hand-me-down reading textbooks had the word "negro" in it.

High School:
* Shitty ass pep rallies for shitty ass teams who never won anything. These were the only times we would actually see the cheerleaders because they couldn't be bothered to actually go to games. And I still cringe when I hear "Jump On It".
* Those of us with cars had to park in a small lot by the baseball field because the main lot was reserved for the attached elementary school to have recess in, despite the fact that the campus had a football and soccer field that nobody used during the day. God help you if it snowed, because they never plowed the student lot.
* They required us to wear IDs despite the fact there were only about 200 people in the school and the teachers knew everybody already. So that only lasted a year.
* In 11th grade the school got taken over by the diocese and changed names, so they got a new school song with notes that anybody with testicles couldn't hit. Plus the whole school just seemed to get shittier.
* In 12th grade one of the classrooms got new desks and chairs. Problem is, they were the kind that are permanently attached to one another, so anybody who's tall or fat (you know, like most 17-18 year olds) couldn't sit or stand easily with those.

College:
I don't know, I stopped giving a crap about stuff because I found alcohol and it made me feel happy.
