Pardon my ignorance, but what has Urlacher done wrong? He always seemed like a pretty decent guy to me.

He got a shitty attitude when dealing with the fans after they booed Lovie last year. specifically that he doesn't care about them. Again the big thing from a football perspective is he's just not the player he used to be. He can still make plays and be a presence, but he's not the Brian Urlacher we knew 6 years ago that would swat down passes and stuff runners left and right. It sucks to admit it because I like the guy and honestly think he makes for a good on-field colonel to make adjustments, but that only goes so far.

The tuck rule needed to go a while ago. Now we can get rid of the ten minute review delay-commercial break every time a quarterback is strip sacked, and watch more football.

As far as the helmet spearing rule, I am not opposed to it on principle but am concerned more about its enforcement.

Yep. Because if there was one thing the NFL needed, it was a rule that will basically ensure stoppage of play and a review every time a team runs the ball.

Plays well for the TV networks though. With a four hour game, you can sell more ad time!



I'm done. The NFL is now more about pleasing network executives and keeping lawyers at bay than it is about putting a quality product on the field for the paying customer.

And that's fine. It's their League.

But I won't be watching.

I've heard that so many times for so many years, and it never happens. You'll be back watching again next fall. Right or wrong, the NFL knows they can do whatever they want, because America is hooked on football.

I don't think it can do whatever it wants. If and when they get around to fundamentally taking the violence out of the game, I could definitely envision a competitor gaining ground on them.

Depends on how far you want to stretch the word "whatever." And what you consider fundamentally taking violence out of the game. Which can't really happen, since a certain degree of violence is required to play the game.

You're on to something with the competitor thing, but I don't know who can realistically step up to the plate. The best players are still going to the NFL, and that won't change for some time. The NFL also has all the TV deals. Plus the competitor leagues have their seasons at a different time of year, I believe. Until all of that changes, the other leagues won't catch on no matter how many rules change.
