Move fast and keep a low profile.

Choose your battles; not every fight is worth it.

Do good work.

Be a friend.

If you realize you would be willing to die for her, then she's the one.

Acknowledge debts, financial and otherwise.

Praise people when they deserve it.

Life is worth it. Even when it sucks.

Crushing disappointment of some kind or another is inevitable at some point or another.

The real trick lies in how you bounce back from those disappointments.

Always have long term and short term goals and keep working towards them. If you need to write these down to keep yourself focused, do it. If you find yourself deviating from your plan, or letting yourself get lazy, don't give up. Reassess whats going wrong and get back on top of things. You reallly don't want to get 10 years down the line and realise you've made no headway with things.

Be willing to change. Thoes that don't stay exactly where they are. (applies to location, attitude, opinions, skills etc etc)

The older you get, the less you realise you know. If you think you know it all, your are as inexperienced as they get.

The old ones are the best:

Know yourself (so many layers to that one)
Everything in moderation
Be reluctant to make promises but keep the ones you do make.

Save 5 per cent of everything you earn.
Regular practice in small amounts is better than one huge effort then giving up.
Sticking with things is more important than talent.
Allow yourself to fail, learn from it and bounce back.
Spend more of the money you set aside for fun on doing things rather than buying things.
Don't strike back at someone for a single slight, wait until they do it twice.
Don't throw the first punch, counterpunching is better.
Read.
Don't multitask if you can help it, it is just doing several things badly.
Learn how to cook.
A leopard in every home, you know it makes sense.

Good advice - but also make sure that you're willing to change the plan, or come up with a new plan, if the original plan's clearly not working.

Sometimes you need to be a Brusilov rather than a Haig.

Ah yeah I meant that as part of the reassessment but not particularly clearly.

Unfortunately a hindrance of a stubborn personality is my tendency towards the Haig side of life all the same.

It seems obvious but seriously guys, go to the sink and check yourself in the mirror at least a few times a day. You never know what's there until you look; people won't always tell you when you've got sick on your face or spinach in your teeth or whatever.

Don't be afraid of mistakes; you will make them. Just makes the ones you can afford to make. If you don't take a chance when you can afford to, you'll regret not knowing what may have happened. Yes, there are always consequences but they aren't all bad, just part of the learning experience. There are chances which aren't worth taking and there are those worth taking. Only you can determine which ones are worth it for you.

I think this is a big one. Consequences in the adult world are generally not a big deal, until you're really into middle age and have a family or something. Before then, the worst that can happen is what? Lose your job? Your apartment? You'll live and get to try again. Nobody's going to hit you, and if they do you can quite easily call the police and file assault charges.
