Because there is no federal set national language, and only hawaii has an official language, it comes under personal freedoms, especially first amendment rights. We have the freedom of speech however it doen't stipulate that we must speak and know English as if it was instinctual. People have to also realize that English is one of the hardest languages to learn.

If the government wants to, let's say, deport someone from the US because they entered illegally and for some absurd reason it refuses to deal in any language other than English(that being the proposed situation I'm addressing), then providing an English education to the accused(and proper compensation for the time spent on it), sufficient to understand what's going on and to defend themselves, is something the government very much does need to spend money on.

Funny story. The translator that worked for me (and several others) when I came into this country in the process of naturalization was later charged, tried, and found guilty of bribery, among other things.

I have no problem with providing important information, such as, "Your kid has just been suspended from school because ..." being provided in a language the parents understand. Learning to speak a new language is not easy for adults, let alone learning to read it. Very often the first generation of immigrants do not learn the new language well. Their children, on the other hand, do. Assimilation does not happen overnight.

Could it be that these people are scared of learning a new language? Scared of change. So funny. Immigrants and those who move a lot are the ones who are capable of quick adaptation. We are, after all, not used to sedentary living.

Where I live my school district actually has forms also available in spanish, chinese, japanese, korea, vietnamese, portugese, russian, and arabic.

I don't understand. Being "from" a given country is what determines if it's "your" country your not? My grandfather was not "from" America - indeed he was by birth a Czechoslovakian (ethnic German, though). He came to America, served in World War II, got his purple heart, and stayed in for some years after the war, all without being a citizen. Is America somehow not "his" despite serving her more actively than many native born folks do?
