You've obviously never tried to learn Elamite. I don't think this comes under the 1st Amendment. That covers political speech for the most part, as in, the government can't throw your ass in jail because you say something against it (in general).

They came to our country because our country is better than the country they came from and instead of learning English and assimilating into our culture they insist on us catering to them and even learning their language? That is messed up. When you move to another country you should respect it and learn their language and their ways. Lets say I moved to Germany. Would I refuse to learn German and only speak English and demand they speak English to? No I would learn German and assimilate into their culture. Now don't get me wrong I love immigration and think that it is a good thing but I strongly believe they should assimilate and respect our culture. If they love their home countries so much then they should just move back then.

Jumping over a border into another country doesn't mean you are from said country that you jumped over the border into.

Most Mexicans are immigrants, very few were actually born in the US.

On the contrary. If the government wants to, let's say, deport someone from the US because they entered illegally and for some absurd reason it refuses to deal in any language other than English(that being the proposed situation I'm addressing), then providing an English education to the accused(and proper compensation for the time spent on it), sufficient to understand what's going on and to defend themselves, is something the government very much does need to spend money on.

No need. They have translators. Much more dignified to be told in your own language that you're a lawbreaker and will be deported. No point to be taught a new language just to be told you're a fuck-up.

I dont see that form was requested in Spanish, since school says they give out forms in other languages if requested.
That sounds reasonable enough. Since most common language is English: its logical to send out communications in English unless requested otherwise.

A few Latino parents are now going after a local school because, after their students were suspended, they didn't provide any information for them in Spanish.

Wut

Firstly, couldn't they have just spoken to someone who speaks Spanish at the school?

And, why is this necessary? Most people in the US, including Hispanics, certainly in Raleigh, speak English. I would never travel abroad to demand that the locals accommodate my English-speaking.

No, it's clearly a diabolical attack on non-English speaking minorities (mostly illegals) to send things out in the most common language.

Funny story. The translator that worked for me (and several others) when I came into this country in the process of naturalization was later charged, tried, and found guilty of bribery, among other things.

Good thing I learned English.

Yeah, yeah ... such disrespect. I have no problem with providing important information, such as, "Your kid has just been suspended from school because ..." being provided in a language the parents understand. Learning to speak a new language is not easy for adults, let alone learning to read it. Very often the first generation of immigrants do not learn the new language well. Their children, on the other hand, do. Assimilation does not happen overnight.

Could it be that these people are scared of learning a new language? Scared of change. So funny. Immigrants and those who move a lot are the ones who are capable of quick adaptation. We are, after all, not used to sedentary living.

There's nothing inherently wrong with giving parents material in English, but knowing that these parents speak Spanish only, it's not absurd that the school should give something the parents can understand.

I don't understand. Being "from" a given country is what determines if it's "your" country your not? My grandfather was not "from" America - indeed he was by birth a Czechoslovakian (ethnic German, though). He came to America, served in World War II, got his purple heart, and stayed in for some years after the war, all without being a citizen. Is America somehow not "his" despite serving her more actively than many native born folks do?
