The times we've actually had a discussion (a proper one, not like this thread) on moderator practices and rulings, they always seem to start off with promise and hope, before another moderator, often uninvolved with the start of the thread, pounces on a comment. From there on in, it devolves into snarkiness, defensiveness and sarcasm. Often from the same mods, who usually have a history of talking down to players and a generally patronising attitude.

Then it gets locked and any decent suggestions have been long buried. I don't think it is intentional, but that is the usual outcome. This generally leaves the older and more experienced players feeling a bit bitter and disregarded. I know a couple of these threads have left a sour taste in my mouth before, as any progress that could hope to be gained is often wrecked.

Yeah, I think I felt the same. Being on forums other than NSG lengthened and sharpened the feeling, since a lot of the people I communicated with were "more experienced" posters that were personally invested on some level or another.

I'm personally finding it a bit harder to be invested into threads now, whether it be because the absence of certain posters, the quality of threads and discussions, or a general disinterest in topics.

I've only ever really been on NSG (and some of the other RP subforums here), so I don't really have much experience of the wider internet world. The attitude of some of the moderators has driven some of the older players away, which is a damned shame. This has undoubtedly had an impact on the quality of the threads (or, at least, the quality of threads on certain topics). There can often be a sense that the mods are a bit of a monolithic bloc, impervious to change, which seems to seep into many of those who become mods. It is, in all likelihood, a two way street. Perhaps they arrive with an idea of what it is to be a good moderator, but then a constant barrage of inanities and idiocies drives away these hopes and dreams and they become as jaded, cynical and inflexible as the rest, I dunno.

But I've not seen any contraversial decisions for a while, at least.

Are Roleplay Mentors really that higher from regular NS'ers for "Importance to the Forum"?

I imagine it depends on whether you need mentoring when it comes to RP or not.

It was and it wasn't, really. I think the main issue was that he defined himself in terms of his sexuality (or at least was happy to talk about it openly), and this was something that was kind of covered by the "Don't promote anything illegal" in the rules. But then this in itself creates issues. I know I've talked openly about the fact I've taken a variety of drugs in the past, even saying that I had an awesome time on some of them. That's probably promoting something illegal and undoubtedly a warnable offence. Likewise, talking openly or admitting to homosexual behaviour is illegal in some parts of the world - should NSers be warned or deleted for that?

I suppose it's a case of where one draws the line. I think it was because zoophilia isn't something many, many people are particularly comfortable with. I, personally, find it weird and creepy - I believe I said so to him, too. But I think he was a decent enough person and a good poster to have here. If he'd reined it in, or at least made it mention of it not so brazenly, he could probably have survived longer.

Perhaps I'm overstepping the mark and speculating on moderator decisions, something I know that is frowned upon. I don't have the full story, just what I saw in the related threads and even then I was usually late in seeing them, due to my job at the time.

I'm not saying I didn't like 1000 Cats (far from it), but continually attempting to skirt the rules about zoophilia probably wasn't the best of decisions. Maybe nation deletion would've been a better punishment than DoS, but still, not the most controversial of decisions from what I could tell.

I was sad to see him go, to be honest.

However, NSG does still have to abide by the rules of the site, and they are fairly explicit. They don't, admittedly, cover zoophilia or related.

I never really formed an opinion on the cat dude.

Indeed the rules are explicit but you did touch on the elephant in the room as it were....we have lots of posters who have posted about illegal activities they have been involved with (mainly every drug or piracy thread) and they are still here.

None of those posters define themselves and most of their activities on the site by that activity, though. You may talk about your experiences with drugs in a larger thread about them, but you don't create a region promoting using illegal substances or define your nation a bunch of pot-smoking, torrent streaming pirates.

Mods let a lot of small things slip, partly because they aren't on all the time or omniscient, but partly because the topics on NSG do invite different opinions that can touch on illegal activities. They can't crack down on every little post without dampening the debates and it takes quite a bit for them to outright ban discussions (like the lead-up to banning pedophilia threads), but a solid pattern of posts and activities will get their attention.
