The times we've actually had a discussion (a proper one, not like this thread) on moderator practices and rulings, they always seem to start off with promise and hope, before another moderator, often uninvolved with the start of the thread, pounces on a comment. From there on in, it devolves into snarkiness, defensiveness and sarcasm. Often from the same mods, who usually have a history of talking down to players and a generally patronising attitude.
Then it gets locked and any decent suggestions have been long buried. I don't think it is intentional, but that is the usual outcome. This generally leaves the older and more experienced players feeling a bit bitter and disregarded. I know a couple of these threads have left a sour taste in my mouth before, as any progress that could hope to be gained is often wrecked.
Yeah, I think I felt the same. Being on forums other than NSG lengthened and sharpened the feeling, since a lot of the people I communicated with were "more experienced" posters that were personally invested on some level or another.
I'm personally finding it a bit harder to be invested into threads now, whether it be because the absence of certain posters, the quality of threads and discussions, or a general disinterest in topics.
I've only ever really been on NSG (and some of the other RP subforums here), so I don't really have much experience of the wider internet world. The attitude of some of the moderators has driven some of the older players away, which is a damned shame. This has undoubtedly had an impact on the quality of the threads (or, at least, the quality of threads on certain topics). There can often be a sense that the mods are a bit of a monolithic bloc, impervious to change, which seems to seep into many of those who become mods. It is, in all likelihood, a two way street. Perhaps they arrive with an idea of what it is to be a good moderator, but then a constant barrage of inanities and idiocies drives away these hopes and dreams and they become as jaded, cynical and inflexible as the rest, I dunno.
But I've not seen any contraversial decisions for a while, at least.
