Yes, it would take a massive amount of energy to get there and back. That doesn't guarantee that they will have enough energy for a massive shield, because that would take the same, if not more power, and that power doesn't replenish. The more power they put on their ship, the more impractical it becomes.

I second that thought, Really wish experts would stop looking at the VERY most complicated methods of space travel and see what is simple and could potentially work for faster than light.. and actually TEST IT!
