Here's the problem for them: we've got seven BILLION. How many can they get across space?

I'm demoralized by the lack of bravado expressed in these comments. We're HUMANS. We built THIS.

Oh, and if the ET's have any sense, they'll stay out of New York - in fact, it'll probably become humanity's last autonomous territories of we were to lose. California can slide off into the Pacific...to quote Sam Spade, there are certain sections of New York that you shouldn't even TRY to invade.

If the ET's had enough tech to get here they could probably take out the whole planet in a week with no casualties on their part.

Your enthusiasm is applaudable, but misguided.

Aliens could probably just bomb the holy horseshit out of major cities like New York, leaving rural areas the only habitable place.

Any civilization that can travel across the stretches of interstellar space can make relativistic kill vehicles. Hell, all they'd have to do is pickup a decent sized asteroid somewhere in the solarsystem, and kick it out of orbit towards Earth, and we're done for. That's it, nothing left to do but turn out the lights, put the chairs up on the tables, and lock the door before we leave. Civilization's done.

They wouldn't need to get many across space. The mere fact they would have the means to cross the kind of distances being talked about means they would almost certainly, by necessity, be on a technological level where numbers would largely be irrelevant.

In all likelihood such a force would probably never need to set foot on Earth until it was their's, with plenty of options for overwhelming deployment of force from orbit or further out available to them (like hitting earth with an asteroid). Think real world examples of technologically advanced nations - those with guns and cannons - taking land from spear/bow & arrow wielding tribes. Only make the technological gap vastly greater (say the modern US military with drones and long range strike capabilities vs. guys with muskets and cannons)

THAT could be reduced to a smoking crater with a fair sized rock travelling at near light speeds. Sufficiently advanced aliens could wipe out all life on Earth without even getting close enough to smell New Jersey.

Reaction:
PANIC!

Tactics:
Bow to the superior invaders and offer our services - including sexual ones if they wish - to them in exchange of being left alive

Enemies co-existing:
Well, if the above tactics work, we'll happily co-exist

Military:
I'll be happy not to be in it. 'cause if it doesn't surrender, it dies or is taken as a PoW to work in the salt mines

Aliens Strategy:
Minimal collateral damage. After all, they're after our women (Probably the men as well), and eliminating our population would be detrimental to their goal of turning Earth' population into a few billion sycophantic servants and sex slaves

Resistance:
I'd rat these fools out at every opportunity to become more popular with my alien masters, rising through the ranks

How much of Earth would the aliens take over?
Everything, of course!

It seems most likely that if we have a "massive alien invasion," it's going to be by some people who have mind-boggling amounts of power and energy available to them. There's nothing we can do to prevent aliens from blasting New Jersey from orbit.

What we can do is try to avoid forcing the aliens to try to wipe us out as a species; and second, we can try to accommodate any demands they're feeling pushy about in a manner that helps us preserve humanity. We have plenty of historical lessons to draw on for that, though exceptions to the rule of the less advanced civilization collapsing under contact with a more advanced civilization are pretty sparse (Japan and Ethiopia would be places that resisted becoming colonies until the application of overt force).

We cannot prevent obliteration; we can prevent relatively peaceful forms of subjugation, however.

Eventually, we'll find out that we're working for the alien equivalent of less than minimum wage, being paid in worthless shiny beads and trinkets. But what can you do? The pay's still better than anything here.
A realistic scenario, but much less fun than my own.

Let me tall you something about an alien invasion.

They're not gonna send a cylinder and a few tripods to knock us up a bit. They're going to send this big ass ship.

And when I say "big ass ship," I don't mean like this:

No, I mean something like this:

Sentinel XV wrote:Why does it always have to be an invasion? Why are all alien races always depicted as hostile and bent on conquest? Is it really that absurd to think that an alien race might be benevolent, or wish to aid the human race?
Historical precedence suggests that the former assumption is a great deal more likely.

When first contact was established with the Americas and Australia, things turned really violent and into genocide really quickly.

However, on the bright side, we don't have to fear alien viruses, and bacteria can be dealt with comparatively easily, so our fate would probably be less 'My country is overran by whites, and I make up less than a percent of the population :(' Indian, and more 'My country and people have been enslaved by whites, and when we finally get our independence, their continual interference will cause decades of ethnic strive and poverty'.

Hooray!

Seeing as smallpox is a virus and thus requires a reasonable degree of genetic similarity to its usual hosts to function at all, this ain't even going to make them cough.

At near light speed you could wipe that out with a rock you can hold in your hand.

Of course, the logistical problems with that are extreme. It's far easier to just drop a really big rock slower.
