Why no Mourning for Donna?

Postby Draculesti Romania » Fri May 18, 2012 2:56 pm

Curiously, I have not seen a topic on the demise of former disco-rock music superstar, Donna Summer. Maybe it is because NS players are too young to appreciate her or are rock purists (for want of a better term). In a way like the folkie backlash against Bob Dylan for replacing acustic with electric guitar -- developing folk-rock music in the mid-1960's -- Summer's stardom made it's entrance forging the 70's culture with her first disco and hit song, the sexy "Love to Love You, Baby," beginning in the mid-1970's (decades' culture does not neatly begin and end on the cusps). Discophiles replaced 'longhairs' as the new phenomenon. Among her many disco songs, Summer recorded the further innovative, "I Feel Love (1977), having a beautifully surealistic, mechanistic sound accompanying her voice, as well as foreground orchestration between Summer's vocals. There was a blacklash to disco...Anti-Gay and anti-Black, white-male rock-holdouts were vehemently against the music (originally, termed disco-soul music). However, disco had a major following among working class white and brown youths (prole-decadents), typified in the 1977 movie, "Saturday Night Fever." As with other musical genres, disco evolved...A versatile Donna Summer merged disco with rock in the late 1970's and early 80's in songs such as, "Hot Stuff," which helped renew much-become-mediocure rock music at the time. By the 1980's disco's string-arrangements evolved into synthetic variations (ie: Eurethmics) and fostered techno-music in the 90's -- 'dance music' beyond, but isn't that a transendant term? Donna, your music's come a long way, baby....

Disco really has died. Who wants to get some bell bottoms, afro wigs and do a bunch of coke to send her off?

I am sure I have heard of her before. The name rings a bell at least. But that's all I know of the subject.

Not to be disrespectful, but perhaps she has not gotten as much attention because she didn't die in some dramatic way, that being said it is Sad, and I have one of her songs on my iPod.

Her family hasn't paid my company, so no gnashing of teeth, wailing of voice, or tearing of hair from me. But if they put down cash, we'll be the best damn professional mourners there ever was.

There's no outpouring of grief because she just wasn't that important. Sure the people who remember her will be sad, and the rest of us will offer condolences or w/e, but the fact is, she's a virtual nobody.

Its kind of a bummer, but they nobody said jack when James Jamerson died.

He was one of the most influential bass players every, cited as formative by a huge range of contemporary high end bass guitarists.

But when he died, even the coroner assistants who put tagged him probably had no idea who the fuck he was. Just another poor black man with lungs full of fluid and a bad liver.

Kind of. Anyway, the big dude from The Green Mile references her. Even sings a bit of her stuff.

A musical pioneer and national treasure, no matter what the dorks with ponies on their flags say. At a time when electronic music was just getting off the ground, this sound was mind-blowing. And she didn't need a fucking autotune.
