How do you believe the US is faring in the world?

Postby The Lost Souls » Fri May 18, 2012 7:58 am

What do you think the US is faring in the world and also at home? Are we coming back to a once strong superpower or heading down the road to a full out revolution and civil war? Just saying.

Still not very popular. Seen as a divided country and a bastion of poverty and extremism (whether accurately or inaccurately).

I think we have fallen behind in matters of health and education, not to mention that we are STILL arguing about evolution in this country.

From what I know:

Most powerful nation for the forseeable future. No one wants to challenge the USA, especially after seeing what happened to them with their position.

Living standards are never going to be the best in the world. Their smaller allies like Canada and Norway would win on that.

Most powerful military for the forseeable future. No military competition other then those the USA wants to call competition. Not even the BRICS would want to compete.

Economically, the largest economy right now unless you consider the Eurozone to be the largest, but is very unstable and uncertain. In the forseeable future, economic influence will decline, but never will vanish.

Education-wise: Not faring so well either. Better hope someone makes the system better.

Healthcare- You're on the right track, but the wrong way.

Superpowerdom-wise: Based off what I believe are the ingrediants for every hyper/superpower, the USA is failing. The more intolorence, the more a nation falls. But that's just me.

The pattern in the US is this;

Government fucks up economy by being too strict and taking too much money. Economy in response then goes to shit

People in response whine and complain demand more government. Rinse. wash. repeat.

US doing pretty bad it relies on other countries to fund its debt, so if the US ever goes bankrupt there would be grave social disorder quite possibly even a full-blown revolution.

Before I give my opinion let me clarify a few things:
1. I am an American.
2. I love America.
3. No, I am not a terrorists.
4. No, I am not an anarchists.

Edit: No I am not a pessimist either. :P

O.K. Now that we have that out of the way here is my opinion:
The US is a goner. Ever since WWII we have been on the decline. Sure we have had OK presidents (strictly in terms of policy): Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter. But for the most part, the presidents have cared more for them selves than the good of the country. And thats just the presidents, don't get me started on the congressmen - a bunch of selfish greedy RICH bureaucrats, who again, care more for themselves than the good of the country. And on top of it all, the corruption is spreading, the government continues to make more agencies, hire more people, increase the chances for corruption. And don't even get me started on the *budget*! Heres how the budget failure cycle goes:

Republicans (or Democrats, they are both equally guilty) want to get elected, they go around spending huge amounts of money to promise people stuff they want, the Democrat incumbent, wants to get re-elected, and he knows the people are angry with him, so he spends more money to remind the people of all the good things he did, and to promise them more is on the way. Say for the sake of argument the Republicans win, congress, the president, the whole shebang. They go ahead and cut a miniscule amount of the budget probelms away, from programs they just don't like (not because they don't work) over a very long period of time (say 10 years). Then, to apease the voters, they go ahead and start spending more money than they would cut in 10 years, in 10 months. On top of this, they decide to make people happy, and cut taxes which increases the fiscal problems even more. Remember, they still have all those promises they made to get elected. So they spend, and the midterms come around and all of a sudden, the democrats are standing their campaign on the fact that the Republicans are spending too much! And so, the republicans decide to switch the debate to taxes! They cut taxes they say! And so the voters keep with the republicans who cut their taxes. Then, in order to fix the fiscal crisis (after they have already secured the mid-terms) they raise taxes again. Then the next election comes around and it starts all over again.

And did I mention foreign policies? WE ARE SENDING FOREIGN AID TO COUNTRIES WHO WE KNOW HAVE CORRUPT GOVERNMENTS AND WILL ABUSE THE MONEY!!! And what about our prisons? Literrally HUNDREDS of studies have shown that prison A. Does not reduce crime. B. That prison actually increases the likely hood of a criminal committing another crime again once he is released. Especially for Low level, non-violent, first time offenders. And this is where we are putting MILLIONS OF PEOPLE. If requested I can provide these studies.

To summarize, I believe the US is on the decline - The Dollar will die, the government will default, and that by prolonging it with inflation the government is only making it worse. Thanks for reading if you finished this incredibly long rant against our government. :)

Illustrates rather nicely the point. Only in America is there any argument - the rest of the western world long ago accepted the facts as being, well, fact.

America has internally been in decline since JFK was killed and has never been on a road of recovery. Internationally, we have never been well liked in my opinion. I blame the leaders for not doing their job, and the people who always vote one side or the other

How should our leaders since 1963 have done their job better? Please be specific. As for people voting "one side or the other," what should people be doing?

half right,
but the fault lies with a backward headed culture and its misplaced priorities, that romanticize thoughtlessness and aggressiveness, and indifference to shared and universal experiences and circumstances.

government doesn't exist in a vacuum.
effective at what? what chooses what for it to effective at?
cultural values and the statistical sum of individual priorities. including those individuals hide even from themselves.

blaming governemts is kind of a copout when it is ourselves, all of us together, who create those cultural priorities. by what we create demand for.
and of course the economic interests, which blindly encourage us to do so, and conceal the fact of our doing so, from ourselves.
