What do you call carbonated beverages?

Postby Maurepas » Fri Sep 25, 2009 8:06 pm

inspired by the OP induced threadjack in the Prayer thread...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_for_soft_drinks
What do you call your soft drinks?

Just softdrinks, soda, cokes... (pains me to say this, lol) pop?

I generally say coke, like most in the South, but, Im picking up soda, just because its more descriptive (ive often sent drinks back when they actually gave me a coca cola when I said coke, lol) and I dont like brand dominance...

How bout you?

Soda, but I live in Chicago, so many other people call it pop. Every time I hear that, I die a little in side.

Usually I refer to it by the specific name of the beverage that I am drinking.

However, generalizing, I say soda.

This. "Pop" sounds funny to me. But 99.9999% of the time, I'll just call it "Pepsi" or "Coke."

When I'm ordering a drink, I will say coke, but that is only because I am ordering a Coke. When referring to the class of beverage, I say soda.

Out of habit "coke" which is different than "Coke(tm)"

I'm trying to transition to "soda" though.

It's really hard.

Regionally:

Soda is coke.
Adhesive bandages are Band-aids.
Jetted tubs are Jacuzzis.
Tissues are Kleenex.
Sofas are Davenports.
Refrigerators are Frigidaires.
Acetaminophen is Tylenol.
Ibuprofen is Advil.
Portable computers are laptops.
Pens are Bics
Cloth bandages are Ace bandages....
etc. for infinity.

We brand things here like nobody's business.

Oh, and permanent markers are "Magic markers" or "Sharpies" depending on size.

Heh, me too, Southerners in the house! Coke, all of them coke.

Oh, and while we're on the subject, I just studied the history of brand names losing their identities. Like people who say "Xeroxing" (heh, Firefox even recognizes that as a word) instead of "copying." It's a brand's worst nightmare.

It also happened to escalators, which I find amusing. What were they before, "moving staircases"?

People only bitch about branding things when it's branding things they wouldn't brand.

Oh, crayons are Crayolas and that little thing I used to demolish my vanity was a Sawzall even though it wasn't. :p
