State bans plastics in the trash

Postby New Xania » Fri Sep 25, 2009 3:04 pm

North Carolina has banned the throwing away of any plastic containers where the neck is thinner then the body (which basically means all water and soad bottles). However the people of the state (myself included) are on the honor system which means it's kinda hard to enforce. They plan on looking in the landfills and garbage trucks to see if people are following the law and if there is more plastic then could be deemed "incidental" the county that it is found in gets fined and that money comes from the tax payers. This whole thing is mean to get people to recycle.

Personally I will continue to throw away my plastic bottles like I have always done in the past. Why? Because I have not been provided with anyway to recycle the bottles nor do I see a need. The plastic issue won't become a problem till long after I'm dead so why should I care?

What do the people of the nationstates forum believe?

On the Internet, everyone and their brother has aspergers. I've learned to ignore the claims long ago.

Not sure if this entire post is simply meant to be inflammatory or what, but I sort of agree there. In the great big scheme of things, in a world where there is no greater purpose other than to exist and live your life, there's no reason to give any particular heed to the future. I mean, what if our ancestors had passed us some sort of legacy of pollution? We'd just adapt and deal with it; our descendants will do the same. All the commercials about recycling or global climate change that invoke the popular guilt reflex of modern day culture are just trying to draw upon the archaic notion that we have some sort of greater destiny in this world. We don't; we're just another animal, who eats, fucks and dies on this planet. There's no reason to dwell on the future we'll never see, just because we have the self-consciousness to do so.

Incidentally, plastic is made from petroleum, which will certainly either run out or become extremely scarce in the lifetime of everyone in this thread under the age of forty or so. Saying the problem won't begin in your lifetime is ignorance at its finest.

First of all, it will affect you. It harms the environment, and when you have kids, they will die because you throw away bottles. Second, its a good idea. I'd gladly support it and separate the bottles from the trash. Third, you remind me of my cousin. He said that "one bottle won't matter" when it would matter. When your kids are dead because of land fills, remember this moment.

This is one of the most backwards and idiotic environmental laws I have ever heard of.

1. Recycling plastic is more expensive than making new plastic, except in factories where they do the recycling in-house.
2. Recycling plastic bottles is a tax on consumers and taxpayers
3. There is no shortage of landfill area nor will there be in the near future
4. Modern landfills are benign and generate their own electricity before becoming soccer fields or parks

Scare-mongering. There is a legitimate reason for recycling. Several, in fact. "ZOMGZ! Your kidz r gonna DIE if you don't recycle!11!!1" Is not one of them, I'm afraid.

What makes you think the poster will even ever have kids?

True that, we've got the whole continent of Africa left! Oooh, I'm insensitive!

No seriously though, my county is negotiating the creation of a landfill with California, where we will allow ~20 tons of garbage per week to be shipped to and stored for the next...I forget, but it's quite a few years.

In the common vernacular of the Intarwebs, "Shit is so cash".

And people on this site think I post nonesense that has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

At least I try to make it related, but out of curiosity, what the hell are you doing?

The systems being implemented across Britain in various areas, in most places it's actually turns a profit.

Although in America you've got enough room to dump all you want so... meh.

We've been doing this sort of thing in the UK for years now.

I've lived in Bristol and Reading (still do live there), and both places have recycling programmes. The one in Reading involves dumping tin cans, drinks cans, plastic bottles and paper (including cardboard) into a second wheelie bin, with specific collection dates for it. Everything else goes in a black wheelie bin in order to get dumped in a landfill.

I honestly can't see the problem with recycling itself, but fining an entire county seems to be a bit... ridiculous.
The plastic issue won't become a problem till long after I'm dead so why should I care?

Brilliant.

That sort of short-sighted attitude is the reason we're having to start recycling things, rather than dumping them in a nice big hole in the ground which we can then cover up and forget about.

I support the initative, but this doesn't seem like it will be very effective at all, mostly because it's unenforceable. However, I hope that North Carolina, the US as a whole, and the world continue to make more green policies.
