I learned that I, an apatheist who culturally identifies with Judaism, know more about Christianity than certain of my Christian acquaintances.
They legitimately thought Easter was about the bunny. :palm:

Easter traditions include a bunny (who is supposed to symbolize something or other) going around and leaving chocolate eggs for children to find (really left by the parents) around the yard as a way to keep the little brats quiet.

Pardon my ignorance, but aren't most Christian holidays based off of the old Pagan ones. I saw on the History channel once that Christian authority routinely put Christian holidays around the same time as Pagan ones to make the conversion process easier.

Celebration of Jesus' resurrection. . . bunny hiding coloured eggs. . .

Exactly. Easter was originally a fertility festival revolving around the mother goddes Eostre (from whose name we also get eostrogen). The early church co-opted lots of pagan holidays, keeping the ritual but changing the meaning.

Yes they are.

Easter is a Pagan Holiday in origin. It is in modern times supposed to be about the resurrection of Jesus Christ, but our culture has forgotten that and now we celebrate the Easter Bunny who lays eggs in our yards.

Happens to all the holidays--companies want 'in' on a Christian thing, Christians go for it, other people want to join in on what is now fun, and boom. Society absorbs holidays.

Actually, Deus and Matt, you're both close, but not quite there.

Easter IS the day of celebrating Jesus' resurrection but, the timing of it, in the west, was changed to accommodate the populace in areas that converted from paganism to Christianity. Very close, though. Same goes for Christmas.

I say embrace it. For me, the fact that I have an excuse to eat a big pile of chocolate is much more relevant than some guy dying horribly and then turning out to be alive. I'm sure it was a very big news item back then, but... chocolate trumps all.

There are more important things to worry about.

Eh, with the wars, famines, genocides, and other BS, I figure that the bunnies just aren't that high on the list. Either that, or we're really screwed.

The hare was commonly associated with Eostre. It was sort of her mascot.

Yeah, but I'm too damn lazy to give up my plush American life in search of some mysterious truth that may or may not exist. Happy with what I've got.
