France has a record of kicking ass that dates back 400 years before the birth of Christ. In the country's history, they've fought 168 major wars and won 109 of them. And yeah, they surrendered pretty fast in WWII, but that was because they hadn't picked themselves up after WWI yet, and that wasn't exactly a schoolyard scrap. France was one of the heaviest hitters in WWI, and they suffered 5.7 million casualties. So yeah, they let the Germans take over officially, but they never actually stopped fighting. The French Resistance was one of the most enduring symbols of Nazi opposition in Europe, as well as being the originator of the trenchcoat-wearing machine gun-wielding merchant-of-death archetype that's become so popular. They blew up bridges, staged daring night raids, assassinated German officers, and looked fantastic doing it. Today, France has the third-highest military spending on the planet and about 300 nuclear warheads at their disposal. They're not to be trifled with.

Just throwing it out there: The french resistance is genrally remembered as much more effective than it really was. The SOE provided the arms, training and most of the agents for the main assualts. Quite alot of the time, especially just before D-Day the resistance failed to acheive many objectives and focoused on doing pointless shit like attacking towns with German garisons and getting themselves and other French civillians killed.

But yeah, the rest of it is a good point. Britain just had the luck fo not being attached to Germany and as such didn't get invaded before we could prepare
