It is that way, more often than not. Sadly, due to budgets and how complicated some scenes may be (or how good or bad the script adaptation is) most movies based off of books tend to suck ass.

Plus, IIRC, the movie started shooting before Lovell was even finished with the book. Apparently, according to TV Tropes, Tom Hanks was the major reason for this.

Some movies based on books have been able to pull it off. Peter Jackson's adaptation of LOTR wasn't too bad.
