at any rate, i apologize for my assumption.
I'm severely libertarian but that's irrelevant, you asserted that if North Carolina didn't recognize same sex marriage gays wouldn't live there.

im not saying that N. Carolina doesnt recognize same sex marriage. im saying they do not preform them in their borders, and gay couples (should) still be receiving all the benefits, as those are primarily federal, and have already said if this is not the case, i disagree with the law.
You said
"if they didnt [recognize same sex marriages preformed in other states], why would they bother living there?"
This is what I'm referring to.

yes. it makes no sense for you to intentionally deprive yourself of benefits. it goes against logic.

it has nothing to do with the heart. they are married. why live in north carolina if it might deprive them of benefits? i would live in New York anyway, much nicer weather.

I have also seen people and places that would tend to support the "popular perception" of the South. But guess what...those people and places exist everywhere. I have met ignorant Englishmen, Canadians, French, Germans, Americans from the north and west and the list goes on. There are squalid enclaves inhabited by ignorant people in all of the countries that I have visited throughout the world.
The civilized Southerners that I have been privileged to meet remind me of the best of the British and they hold many of the same values. Not too surprising since many Southerners are of British stock. I admire the culture of the South. There is a warmth and courtesy in that culture that can make strangers feel comfortable and welcome. If that courtesy is returned there can be no better place to spend ones' time. Get over the worst of the past, people. It's long gone. The best survives.

So yeah as someone from Kentucky, and a proud Southern I am more than happy to be called a Redneck, Hillbilly, or whatever "slur" people come up with.
Also in regards to South hate I will admit we do have a rather bad image fostered from the bigots that ran about in white hoods making us all look like a bunch of blundering fools. However civil war misconceptions don't help as the OP stated.
