Saw it before and i see it now. Slavery was common back then. It was a staple of the economy. The North was trying to ruin the South because they were making more money. So yeah. slavery was a right. slaves are property. We have the right to property, its not even an american right, its a basic human right.

Another basic human right is to be free from involuntary bondage. This right supersedes the right to property.

You obviously didn't read my earlier remarks, did you?

I'm talking about people who say that Northerners can't criticize Southern slavery because Northerners had slaves, too; that they can't criticize Southern lynchings because the North had lynchings, too; that they can't criticize Southern segregation because the North had segregation, too.

My answer to that argument is (and has been throughout the bulk of this thread) that the difference between North and South lies in the length and extent of the evils perpetrated, the length and degree of refusal to recognized the evils perpetrated as evil, the length and ferocity of resistance to any effort to ameliorate, correct, or repair the evils perpetrated, and the continuing refusal to accept blame or criticism for any of the foregoing.

Genocide doesn't really come into it - although I might add that the South has the rest of the country whipped silly on that score, as well.

To say that the North is worse (or even no better) than the South because it committed genocide against the American Indian while the South "only" engaged in African slavery is more than a little disingenuous, considering that what the Shawnee, Blackhawk, Cheyenne Lakota, and Nez Perce suffered was nothing compared to what happened to the Cherokee, Choctaw, Creeks, Chickasaw, and Seminoles.

So greater crimes and a lack of remorse. I'm sensing a pattern here, aren't you?

The OP of this tangent was pointing out the flaws of the South without bringing up the North. You do not have to bring down other geographic areas to try to protect your own.

And, by the way, those states are not the quintessential "North", which in this argument seems to be mostly New England-area. Your examples are the Midwestern/Rustbelt states, which are almost as backwards as the South.

The manufacturing jobs in the northeast are gone forever for the most part and with the cost of living being lower in the Southern states, the south will likely experience better economic and population growth over time. While most of the north can stagnate under stricter labor laws and higher taxes.

Texas is the 2nd largest economy in the nation (California), and the 15th largest economy in the world. you really dont care if that productivity leaves?
