Why South Hate?

I'd much rather stay here in my native South, last week I went up North to pick up my brother who is going to college in Philly. My goodness those Yanks are assholes, everywhere I drive they were trying to run me off the road...especially those damn taxi drivers!!!

Everytime I've been to the North I'm confronted with unbelieveable rudeness, down here people are much nicer.

So you call everyone from the North an asshole because you couldn't handle inner city driving. Yeah, that explains a lot about the southern mindset.

The state in which they reside is their home as well, and as such are deserving of every right that a non-homosexual has. The idea that they should be forced out of their homes to please the majority is, once again, disgusting. Homosexuals only demand the rights that everyone else has, and if that is too open minded and tolerant, a thing that the OP and others declared to be primary to southern culture, then the south is full of shit.

I've seen examples of anti-gay intolerance (and racial bigotry) in every state of the Union and in many other countries. That doesn't prevent me, a native North Carolinian, from getting along just fine with my lesbian next door neighbors, my gay step-nephew, or the thousands of other gays in my immediate area. Yes, the law is imperfect, but law has always trailed popular opinion. That's no reason to use a broad brush to condemn all Southerners.

Not "all" Southerners, but a large majority. I certainly wouldn't want to live anywhere in the Confederacy. Michigan is bad enough.

The principle is that you have a single mindset, probably of openness and tolerance, but that is not he only mindset, nor can we say that it is the best simply becuase that is our mindset so every other mindset seems stupid or mislead.

I know that is not the only mindset, but I believe mine is less damaging; and it's not just mine. I just adhere to it.

People in florida are assholes, but here whites are the minority. Ive been to gerogia, alabama, kentcuky, and a bunch of other states where people are real nice and friendly. But ive been to NYC to and that place sucks in terms of kindness. people are self centered snobs there.

Philadelphia is an exceptional haven of rudeness and drunken stupidty in general. By and large the more northernly states aren't exactly or even remotely like Philadelphia.
It's like me judging the entire south based upon one fleeting visit to Mobile, Alabama. I've been there, it's not very friendly to anybody without a southern accent. Lots of pickup truck drivers without a clue...

This does not, however, excuse the current state of affairs in the South in which the majority of states outlaw same sex marriage and adoption, refuse to outlaw employment discrimination, housing discrimination, and institute same-sex hate crime laws,

Yes because legislation is a magic pencil that solves everything.

The current "anti-discrimination" laws (Affirmative Action, Title IX, etc), are already bad ideas and simply perpetuate racism. Similairly, such laws to discriminate against gay employment, housing,etc (Which I have never seen in the South. You do really need to actually come to the South. Your bigotry would be lessened if actually knew what you were talking about.) will only perpuate society's problems. The greatest victories against racial discrimination were MLK and Rosa Park's fights. The bus boycotts and rallies. Not the legislation pen of Kennedy (who was willing to let MLK rot in jail until politics dictated otherwise).

I'm not saying that homosexuals should be allowed into positions simply to allow for diversity, merely that they not be fired for the sole reason that they are homosexual. Similarly, they shouldn't be denied housing simply because they are homosexual. That is the only protection from discrimination necessary in those fields.

I have been to the south a total of six times. I wasn't impressed.

Legislation is what ended the discrimination, which is what King and Parks truly fought for; Government recognition of their rights via law and government action.

The problem is not the intolerance, the problem is when said intolerance leads to acts that violate individual rights. Case in point with Lincoln's view of black people having the same rights as individuals as whites despite the Dred Scott vs. Sandford verdict.
