Before you squash that cockroach...

Postby Generex » Fri May 04, 2012 8:13 pm

Cockroachs can get lonely, apparently

Maybe it didn't need its own thread (Sorry about that), but i find this bbc article fascinating. They make decisions, socialize with eachother, share information, and even recognize family members. Its also interesting that their kind of a egalitarian species, a bit like a democracy if i understood the article correctly.

At any rate, I'll be a bit more hesitant to kill one the next time i see one...

We must introduce liberal and conservative cochroaches into the population so they'll stop advancing and fight amongst themselves while we prepare the bug bombs.

I'm sorry, but my love for non-human species has two exceptions: mosquitoes and cockroaches.

For those two, there's only one commandment in my book:

The only thing I need from the BBC is for them to keep pumping out episodes of Doctor Who.

I kid, I kid. This is actually interesting.

But mimes do not exist. Everytime I suspect someone to be a mime I ask them "are you a mime", but they just ignore me.

I would like to see the original article. News articles tend to exaggerate and oversimplify. I'm wondering what exactly they mean about creating rules, but certainly they can recognize family members, communicate with chemicals, and, though I hadn't really considered it before (I avoid working with bugs) probably do get lonely as social creatures.

But, it's a cruel world out there. I eat cows, shoot deer, I step on ants, I do whatever it takes to kill spiders, and sorry, but roaches in my house are going to learn that roaches ought not to be in my house. I would expect nothing less from them.
