In my ongoing quest to discover and understand American pop culture, I've uncovered this. It's not for the faint of heart. The images may be too much for sensitive minds and delicate stomachs, but I have to know ... why?

I like a bit of sun now and then. It adds a bit of a glow if done properly and prudently, using appropriate amounts of sunblock, but tanning beds and tanning salons are bewildering to me. And the complexion of Tan-o-mom resembles nothing so much as a piece of well-aged saddle leather - don't tell me that she's mentally deficient, that's obvious, but it does seem that this particular variety of intellectually challenged individual is pandemic in today's populace. Is this just a variation on the disorder that causes eating disorders, tight clothes, too much make-up and the Kardashians or is it a discreet disorder that must be studied separately from the rest.

And we won't even get started on what she's doing to her daughter.

I'm not fond of tans to begin with. I'm more fond of fair complexions. This is ludicrous. Hope she enjoys her melanoma.

They work better on some skin than others. Overdoing it always looks bad.

as a polynesian I'm blessed with a natural tan so I absolutely have no idea why pale folk do such unnatural things to themselves. Pale skins can be quite attractive and on occasion I've proved partial to a redhaired pale skin lass, just as I've enjoyed darker skinned fijian hines and even once an orange-skin girl after a failed spray-tan incident.

enjoy the melanin you have and let the sun do the rest...

op it should be illegal for children under 17 to go near tanning booths or cosmetic surgeons...

Since every disorder needs a common name, and "tanorexic" is a really bad one, I suggest we call them Fry-Hards instead.

Essentially she's addicted and to justify that addiction to herself she's subjecting her daughter to harm. She's not stupid per se, I don't think this is a choice as such at this point - she's in deep justification denial.

She should be treated.

I feel sorry both for the woman, who has a complexion only beef jerky could envy, and for the kid. She's clearly deep in denial, and the kid will end up a victim.

It's this whole obsession with looks, if she was addicted to washing dishes or cleaning doorknobs people would generally be 'she has a problem' but because it's related to looks she's 'ugly' and 'stupid'.

..and, sure, it's not exactly the same as OCD behaviour but in many ways it's worse, it's an issue of poor self-esteem and self-worth taken into overdrive. Some people eat, some people get ridiculous plastic surgery, all are criticised for their response which is a result of the issue of looks in the first place.

In almost no area other than looks do we feel so free to criticise when, so very often, it's beyond the control of anyone - and when they do try to control it and that leads to extreme..

Yeah. You're right and I regret joking about her. If she was torturing herself with cigarette butts we wouldn't joke about her, um, habit.
