I've stated before I don't think maiming or killing rapists is the answer. I may be reading it wrong but I don't want to understand his mindset. Understanding someone is sometimes a pretext for having sympathy for them -- and I haven't any for this person.

Civilized, level headed, practical answer: I want him to go to jail for what he did. I want something to happen to him so that he never does it again.

Either way, relevant to the discussion, the ability to control something almost inevitably leads us to understanding it better. The two are pretty well linked.

Before this, I did not know about this world that I would soon be thrown into where more than 3 out of the 10 people I told, replied with "me too". Where the 1 in 5 girls in the United States statistic becomes a real thing. So I'm becoming very passionate about the topic, and would like to use NSG as an opportunity to discuss the topic, try to raise awareness, and finally just kind of try to figure out why it has to happen, and how we can remedy it. I'm coming out with it, as soon as I am, because I want to put a name and a face to the statistic, and bring in my raw, week old experience, to do something about it.

depends. if it serves to move the story forward, is done tastefully, yes. if it's just a scene that the director felt would be fun to watch and was done with all the care given to killing a cockroach... then no.

Why is it that girls and men are so ashamed when they've been raped?

I'm sure it's been said before... but in most rape trials, the victim is put on trial and made to look like something that they're not.

Why is it such a taboo subject?

dunno... I guess for survivors of Rape, they feel that it brings up bad memories they would rather not relive.

depends on how... to initiate a serious discussion on the subject to raise awareness... then yes. to ridicule the rapist and/or victim... no.

Hey folks - a gentle reminder that especially in sensitive and heated (for very good reason) discussions, we still need to be mindful of the words we use, and try to be responsible in how we use them. While I in no way excuse rape in any form, I can't condone the sort of brutal, knee-jerk commentary that is screaming for law-breaking reactions. Site rules. I'm not sure an atmosphere of revenge is terribly healthy as opposed to one of seeking justice for what has been done to far, far too many. The two are not necessarily synonymous.

I'm sorry to hear that...

I'm not! I'm actually quite happy about it. Being able to move past it is a quality I admire in myself, and has probably made me a happier person than I would be if I was still fighting it.

Way I see it, I was raped. There's no changing it, at this point there's no getting the rapist to jail, and although I'm uncomfortable every time I see her, I can't let it control my life. But it's probably not that easy for most people, considering the reactions most people seem to have about it, even now.
