I was thinking about this and my own experiences.
For me, it's a lot like what's happened after I quit smoking (bear with me):
It's been 10 years since I quit, but it's never really fully gone away. I rarely, if ever, think about it. But every so often something will hit that trigger and I'll get a cigarette craving.
It's been over 15 since I was assaulted. I almost never think about it anymore, but every so often there's a trigger and I'll get really uncomfortable (or angry).
Basically: you can move on, you can put it aside, but it never fully goes away. Just gets more and more tolerable.
