I'm addressing this comment to all who may visit the thread post-bump, not just Coenston:

This thread is not the right place to discuss what constitutes an appropriate punishment for rapists.

Please understand, we're on page 89 and the thread has existed for a year now.

We have covered this angle many times over already.

Also some posters in the thread who have experienced rape, have asked that discussions of a violent nature be taken elsewhere as they find it upsetting - and ultimately the point of the thread is to provide a safe space for people affected by rape to discuss their experiences.

Thank you.

Yaltabaoth has nailed it. So consider that post mod-sanctioned, because this is not the place to discuss violent punishments for rapists. If you cannot respect the wishes of those who were victims to take such conversation elsewhere, then I suggest you respect the fact that moderation will be forced to act against those who continue to carry on with such discussion.

I wish appropriate justice could be done in a lot more rape and sexual assault cases.

I read an article on the war in the Congo. It shook me, more than I could adequately describe. There's a plain difference between education and ending the confusion that leads to attacks and that leads to 84% of American rapists not understanding that they are doing something wrong and people who do something wrong knowingly, even when they understand that the person they're hurting is a person and is being hurt, for their own gratification. I wish they could just stop existing. I don't want to help them or understand them. If it makes me a bad person for wishing we could round those people up and send them into the sun on a rocket, I guess I'm not ready to be the better person at this moment.

Ehh...I don't know what you're getting at with this, but this isn't the place to discuss that.

Just saying, there are so many perspectives, so many ideas, such an emphasis on not discounting the humanity of rapists, and I know why and I have to agree to try, but I just don't think it's possible to humanize people when they've gone to that point.

Bear in mind the environment they grew up in, the Congo has been in a state of bloody war for decades, children get abducted to be soldiers and that's how they're raised, think of all the dirt they have to do, all the shit they had to see, that can really fuck with your psyche, all they were probably taught about sex is take what you want in a raid. Even for civilians it's just normalized, it's a really fucked up place, you gotta look at the circumstances

I refuse to drop this to cultural relativism. No. Harm is wrong. Hurting people when you know what you're doing is wrong. "We did as we were told" didn't get Nazis off the hook, and rightly so, so it sure as shit doesn't get them.

There is no excuse for this, it becomes your own volition when you cross the line of harming another person for the sake of an idea.

I think it might be easier to humanize rapists if there weren't so many getting away with it. If someone commits a crime, gets caught, serves a prison sentence, and repents, THEN it is easy to empathize with them and to pity them for what they went through in prison, and for having to live with the psychological burden of their guilt. Even people that have committed serious crimes can be respected as human beings once they've been brought to justice and understand what was wrong about their actions. The problem with rapists is that is not happening. They're mostly not being brought to justice and reformed. So it's hard to forgive and heal.

I mean, it's still the same. The DA still said no, I'm still trying to make it through.

The anniversary is coming this Monday. This weekend is going to be something else. Saturday is Picnic Day in Davis, Sunday is the anniversary of Picnic Day, the night of which this happened, and then Monday is the anniversary is the day I spent all day with the cops and in the hospital. so I'm not looking forward to it, but I've surrounded myself with friends and whatnot. I'm so sorry I haven't been in here y'all, I just haven't had it in me to talk about this kind of stuff.
