England, and I've really never seen it used negatively. To me it's shorthand for japanese, in the same way that brit is for british. None of the Japanese people I've talked to have ever taken offence at it, so I really don't see the issue.

If a japanese person reads this and tells me they take offence at the word, I won't use it around them. For anyone who's not japanese, they frankly would need to get over any negative connotations they have of it, because I'm not going to start writing out the full word every time. >.>

Agreed. It's a bit negative in the United States, as well, at least where I live. I made the mistake of saying it when I didn't know that and the Japanese person I was talking to took pretty heavy offense.

Thing is, my use of jap itself implies endearment. I don't use shorthand versions of places I couldn't care less about. I'll use "japs" and "yanks" and "ruskies" specifically because I actually do like those places. So w/e, it's all about how people take it and I generally only care about the opinion of people who are the target of the historical negative usage in that regard (simply because if no-one of the actual target race in the vicinity cares, then why should anyone not of that race? That's just making something out of nothing). If they really find it offensive I won't use it around them.

As far as the racial issue, some of your points, I agree on, and some of them I'm not so sure (like the Japan thing).

This situation was created because of racial tension. And not racial tension against black people, either. This happened because their friend (Oscar Grant) was killed by a white cop. Why don't you let me tell you the story? Oscar Grant and a bunch of people were in a ruckus at one of the BART stations. When the BART cops showed up and tried to stop the situation, they told them all to get to the ground. Oscar Grant would not get to the ground. The cop, scared and stressed out because of all the chaos everywhere, went to get his taiser to get Grant to the floor. In the frenzy, he accidentally grabbed his gun and shot Grant.
Since then there's been huge explosive shit about how it was racist what he did, and how he deserves all this crazy punishment. It's turned into a racist issue, when it was an accident.
Those men were Oscar Grant's friends and they were going to a candlelight vigil the next night. I was raped. I was abused. My latina roommate and her black friend? Nothing happened to them. It's bull shit.

I've been told by a lot of people that people of color cannot be racist, because they are not powerful, which is BULL SHIT. Attitudes like this are the cause of "reverse-racism", which is really just racism. It's more and more and more prevalent day by day. I experienced it all the time with my roommate and her friends ("someone called me white." "those are fighting words", etc.) ("I can't listen to this white people shit music", "that's such a white people show", "you can't say that, you're white", "fuckin white people", "white people don't have to work for what they have" <- THIS WAS ACTUALLY SAID "we're only friends with those white people because..."). I did this every single fuckin day. Attitudes like this are ridiculous and white racism is everywhere. No one ever thinks of mexicans or asians or anything like that when they think racists. They think whites. Mexicans and black people and asians can all be just as racist as white people. Look at what happened to me. Living proof.

Not wanting to arrest a black guy in an Oscar Grant t-shirt, especially one with a gang in tow (who are all accessories to the crime and should be arrested and charged also).

(I'm not saying it's a good reason, I think it's a particularly shit one - your case should be prosecuted regardless of politics - but it sounds like this DA is a cowardly rat-bastard anyway, so I can see how that might be a factor for him.)

Yeah I've heard and countered that bullshit, their response was to call me an undercover white man, which I laughed at, people of color can indeed be racist against white people and do very horrible things because of it,, it's still racism, a bit more understandable but racism nonetheless and I face up to it I argue with these people. If a woman, or girl who is not ugly wears something revealing, or somewhat attractive, a guy ( including my self) will find her attractive. If someone is attractive, you'd want to have sex with them.
Now a rapist is an insane and evil person, that cannot resist temptation, and will resort to violent methods of having sex with the girl. Furthermore, porn increases people's awareness of what sex is, and might increase their desire for it.
