I'm Christian, unless you're gay?

Postby New Paris » Mon Apr 30, 2012 10:00 pm

http://www.danoah.com/2011/11/im-christian-unless-youre-gay.html

I know that this article is really old, but tell me what you think. I want this to be an open discussion so try to keep the hate to a minimum.

*Edit: My Opinion*

My opinion is that this article was right. Religon is the worst excuse ever for someone who is homophobic. And I do agree with the article that Christians can be hypocritical.

At the same time, we need to realize that not all Christians are like this. I know lots who are very accepting.

PS: I would suggest you read the testimonies other stories that stem from this article. They are truly inspiring.

I like what he is trying to say, but I don't get why he is wrapping the issue up in religion. It is just one of the ways people justify bigotry and hate for others, nationality is also used, for example.

I think it is a good article, but it didn't need the religion, that is just my opinion, though I guess that may come from me being in a place that is a lot less religious (I think I know one person who regularly goes to church) and a lot more understanding. For example, I know several people who are gay, and no one cares because it's viewed as a personal thing. However, I do know that there are people in the UK who are just as homophobic. I guess it could come down in part to community size, I mean, I live in one of the largest cities on the earth so there is a degree of anonymity lacking in small US towns.

There is also the issue of him wrapping up being a decent human being with being Christian, which I disagree with as I'm not Christian but I at least try to be a good person.

This belongs in General - moved accordingly.

And OP, you're supposed to tell us what you think, please - not just ask others for their opinion.

Based on my Faith:

About gay people - really hasn't been an issue. No one "came out" at any Congregations that I went to, and we don't exactly go into people's houses to find out.

About people who dress differently - we talking offensively, or just differently? Going goth's ok. Having a tat that says "Austerlitz for religious people" isn't.

About people who act differently - same as above.

About fat people - erm, I thought we did this in grade school.

About people with drug addictions - we help them out.

About people who smoke - erm - ok - how's this bad? I guess encourage them to be careful about second-hand smoke.

About people with addictions to alcohol - we help them out.

About people with eating disorders - we help them out.

About people who fall away from their faiths - probably asking "why" would be the start.

About people who aren’t members of the dominant local religion - and?

About people who have non-traditional piercings - see above, under "dress differently"

About people who just look at you or me the wrong way - maybe they're just tired?

...so why worry about such a jerkass and his followers?

Who cares if some damn pinko hippie said "judge not, lest thee be judged thyself"... eh.

Based on my lack of any faith:
About gay people - no problem. Wish they could marry whom they like and adopt children.
About people who dress differently - it depends if appropriate or not. Not exactly my business anyway.
About people who act differently - same as above.
About fat people - not good for their health. Not exactly my business unless they ask for my help.
About people with drug addictions - not good for their health. Not exactly my business unless they ask for my help.
About people who smoke - not good for their health. Not exactly my business unless they break some smoking ban.
About people with addictions to alcohol - not good for their health. Not exactly my business unless they ask for my help.
About people with eating disorders - same as for fat people.
About people who fall away from their faiths - welcome to the wonderful world of atheism.
About people who aren’t members of the dominant local religion - I am myself.
About people who have non-traditional piercings - I find piercing to be gross, but, then again , not exactly my business.
About people who just look at you or me the wrong way - if looks could hurt I'd be dead by now... frankly I don't give a damn.

I like it, and I'm a Christian. I believe that homosexuality is a sinful lifestyle, but that's no excuse to reject or persecute people that are gay. I think Christianity has approached this subject in the wrong way.

There are many versions of Christianity, so stereotyping all of Christians into one wouldn't be cool.

christianity is immoral for persicuting anyone. period. it is also hypocritical, as are western religions generally, for telling people not to lie, then telling them to pretend to know things that are not and cannot be, known.

i don't think most christians are evil exactly, just misguided. many are well meaning. still glad not to be one.

(but i have to love what "the bread sultan" just posted. which is what EVERY religion is supposed to be all about. there's just no end to excuses their "followers" come up with not to "get it".)

I'm onto page 2 of the, er, essay.

"God hates people who shop at Salvation Army"

I'm trying to follow the gist of it, and to imagine what it must be like to live in Cloacaville Utah, but I gotta say: that is comedy gold.

...

OK, I have read it right through. The interpretations of religion are very shallow ("they all say to love") and the author doesn't quite extend her theoretical love to everyone, but it passes the rant test: I'd stay around and hear it out if someone was actually saying all that out loud as a rant.

15042 comments on that article. That would be over 600 pages on NS.

Now I feel bad about giving it so much attention. Better things are written here on General and get no replies at all.

I'm Christian, unless you're gay?

Postby Qpegtopia » Tue May 01, 2012 4:49 am

First of, I think it is great that this thread has not :yet: become a humongous flame war on religion vs. non-religion. It shows a great amount of maturity and discretion among the NS community. Thanks to everyone here for that.

That being said, I think that this article, is poignant, full of emotion, but on the whole unnecessary. I am not trying to be insensitive here, and I am pretty sure some people will see it that way, but there is no point in arguing or ranting about the fact that some religious sect or political organization condemns a certain act as unsavory and immoral.

In the end, Christians are people, just like the rest of us. So are gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transsexuals, pansexuals, etc. We all have lives, and we all have opinions. And that's where it ends. As much as you may want to, you cannot fault someone for having an opinion, and you cannot force them to change it. Sure, if they actively do something to you that violates your rights by law, you can prosecute them for that, but otherwise, one's opinion is one's own.

And I'm not saying that Jacob's plight is meaningless. Countless people go on in silence everyday because they are unable to express their opinion without scrutiny by those they hold dear. It is a heavy burden that tests the wills of man to the limit. But there is no solution to end this plight. You can end the suffering only when the world decides it is ready to accept all peoples, regardless of age, sex, gender, and ethnicity. And as long as people hold tight to archaic ways of thinking, this will be no less a dream than that one which slips away with the first light of morning.

One day soon, we may live in a world where one is free to be themselves. Or we may not. One day soon, we may have the power to stand up for our rights. Or we may not. All we can do is keep our eyes up to the sky and work toward a better tomorrow. That is the best thing anyone can do.
One is the Heart, Two is the Soul. And Three is the Spirit. Upon a Heart of purity and wings of light, the unblooming flower shall rest on the crown of the sky king, and the Golden Age shall begin.

I believe that being homosexual is a sin. And I am perfectly fine with them being so as long as they don't crowd the streets and prod around to make it known. That's when it becomes a problem.

It becomes a problem because everyday life is having to become altered. But we're not going to argue this here in this thread, as it is irrelevent.

i'm very glad to hear this. yes i have now gone to the sight and skimmed the first page of it. it IS probably a good thing for people who think their beliefs, whatever they may happen to be, tell them to only be considerate, and thoughtful, let alone loving, to only some people and not others. i count myself fortunate to not number myself among such persons.

I can't be certain, but my interpretation is that he is attempting to tell people that the vocal evangelicals that are so diametrically opposed to homosexuality don't speak for all christians, and he is using his own and a friends story to highlight this.
It's a message worth repeating, especially since he tells his own tale about being an ill-informed prejudicial jerk like the people he warns against and what got him to change his mind.
Personally, as long as he's a person that sees the value in all human beings regardless of pithy potential differences, he's alright by my standards regardless of his faith.

I'm sure he is alright, I in fact respect him for speaking out even though (from the post) it is a minority view where he lives, and I think there is far too much of using a minority group as the voice of all. I have noticed it especially when it comes to Islam, which I know is off topic, but far too often a radical cleric is used as "the voice of the Muslim world" which is much the same as using Fred Phelps as the voice of the Christian west.
