The Melenchon rallies during the french electoral campaign were wonderful. So deep with emotion and reason, mixed together at the service of hope and building a better future. Especially two parts on his latest speech, the one that went more or less like (but much better than my memory of it) « They ask for the cost of our program, but what's the cost of their policies ? We ask for the cost of misery ! We ask for the price of ignorance, when they remove teachers ! We ask for the price of pain, when they close hospitals ! We ask for the price of death, when hundreds people every year die at work, and thousands are mutilated for life ! We ask for the price of humiliation, when people sleep outside in front of empty buildings ! » and later on, when he praised skill and intelligence of workers, and their capacity to innovate and build a better future. Well, you should learn French and then see it ! :)

Forster Keys wrote:As unsympathetic as I am, I can't really get into that speech in the OP with the knowledge its basically some murderous Puritan justifying his own dictatorship. Sounds like Taliban material.

as I said it is not a thread about cromwell, it is a thread about what inspires you. I shall let what you chose to dwell on speak for itself.

on the subject of fiction or non-fiction, it is meant to be speeches that inspire you, if fiction is more stirring than fact I say go for it!

It's a quote, not a speech, but I like it all the same.

“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”

JFK's inauguration speech was pretty good.

Also, I hate Cromwell.
Removing the text from people's sigs doesn't make it any less true. I stand with Yalta.

The Cromwell one isn't particularly inspiring. It's just like the material spewed forth by any two bit street corner fire and brimstone preacher.
